Housemarque delivered its best game to date with 2021’s sci-fi shooter Returnal, while its launch also went hand-in-hand with the studio being acquired by PlayStation. Naturally, then, many are wondering what’s next, and while we don’t yet have concrete answers on that front, it seems the studios is continuing to grow as it ramps up work on its next project.
As spotted by Push Square, Housemarque studio head and co-founder Ilari Kuittinen is listed as one of the speakers for Reboot Develop Blue 2023, and his accompanying bio reveals that following continued recruitment and expansion, the studio has grown to 110 people by now. There’s also brief mention of its next project, with the bio stating, “The company is currently focusing on developing the next game production under PlayStation Studios umbrella.”
Details on Housemarque’s next game, as one might imagine, are currently scant, though Kuittinen confirmed last year that it will be another new IP. Prior to that, he also expressed the studio’s desire to “go beyond” what Returnal accomplished with whatever came next, while Housemarque’s senior narrative designer Eevi Korhonen has also spoken about wanting to use unused Returnal ideas for the new IP.
