Kojima On “Overly Sexualised” Characters: I Am Going To Take A Different Approach In Death Stranding

Will I be ashamed of my thoughts and deeds again?

Hideo Kojima is an excellent, excellent game maker, but he has come under fire in the past for his unnecessarily sexualized depiction of Quiet in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, in spite of his promise that there will be characterization to add substance to said sexualization.

With Death Stranding, Kojima is back to asserting that his female characters won’t be unnecessarily sexualized, and that any that do exist will have back stories fleshing them out and justifying their presence within the larger narrative of the game.

“I’m going to have a different approach for the next game,” he said in an interview with BBC. “What I really want to avoid is, like you see in some games, characters with big breasts with no back story. If I make characters that at first glance might look like this then they’ll have a deep background story to give a specific reason why.”

Which, after how Quiet was supposed to have made me ‘ashamed of my thoughts and deeds’ but didn’t, I’m not willing to buy until I actually get to play the game. Sorry.

Death Stranding is due to launch on PS4 and PC.
