Marathon’s Rook Imbibes the Tarkov-Style Scavenger Fantasy While Offering a Player “Morality Test”

Do you offer some loot to a Rook or shoot them in the back? The choice, among many others, is yours in Bungie's extraction shooter.

A new Developer Insights video is available for Bungie’s Marathon, detailing all seven playable Runners – their kits, play-styles, you name it. The Destroyer is your standard Tank; the Thief is the loot goblin; the Assassin is the Rogue; so on and so forth. We even get a proper look at the Triage, a Support shell capable of reviving allies from a distance and even duplicating consumable effects to heal them.

However, the most interesting of all is the Rook. Similar to the Free Kits in ARC Raiders, your loadout is pre-selected, and you can’t bring any other items. During this time, you can scavenge and loot accordingly, adding to your arsenal without risk. Furthermore, it’s possible to blend in with UESC forces – the PvE enemies roaming the map – which helps to disguise you from players while also removing aggro (not unlike Escape from Tarkov’s Scavs).

The kicker is that Rooks join ongoing matches and always remain solo. Bungie hopes to create “morality tests” for players who happen upon them. Do you drop some loot for the Rook and let them go their merry way, or gun them down?

The choice is yours, but remember: Not everyone whom you show kindness to may reciprocate. Regardless, it’s the ideal mode for those who want to build up an arsenal without risks while taking a break from quests and other progression.

Marathon launches in March for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC at $39.99. With so many Runners, it’s perhaps unsurprising that there will be tons of cosmetics to unlock. Head here for more details.
