4A Games’ Metro 2039 is indeed real, as Xbox has announced a First Look showcase to serve as a world premiere for the title. It’s taking place on April 16th at 10 AM PT.
Further details weren’t offered, but the title is confirmed to be the “fourth mainline entry” in the franchise. Of course, you should still expect it to take place in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by nuclear fallout. Based on the name, it could take place about three years after the conclusion of 2019’s Metro Exodus.
Story-wise, nothing is known, aside from it having an “even darker story.” 4A Games has been extremely tight-lipped on the sequel since its announcement in late 2020. At least we know that it’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, so that’s a plus. Perhaps we’ll also learn about that multiplayer experience that the studio was also working on.
Why is it appearing under an Xbox-branded show? The company claims that it’s “always been a home for the franchise,” and that it’s “honored to continue that relationship” with this First Look showcase. However, you have to wonder if there could be something deeper (like a Game Pass deal).
Of course, it could simply be as Microsoft says. After all, Metro 2033 debuted on Xbox 360 and PC, and would remain exclusive to the console for years. In a sense, it’s like coming home for 4A Games.
Either way, stay tuned for all the coverage on Metro 2039 later this week, and check out our review for Metro Exodus in the meantime.
