Minecraft Dungeons – Dev Diary Explores Environmental Design

Check out how the development team is mixing handcrafted levels and randomly generated sections.

Though Mojang hasn’t dated Minecraft Dungeons – beyond a generic “April 2020” release window – it has released new developer diaries outlining different aspects of the game. The latest talks about environmental design and how the team mixes hand-crafted levels with randomly generated elements. Check it out below.

It’s actually interesting to hear about the process of making rooms unique, even if it’s to have different lighting, shapes and objects. Balancing a level in such a way that it’s good for both solo and multiplayer is also important. This all seems pretty fundamental for level design though and we’ll see how Minecraft Dungeons can execute on these principles.

Minecraft Dungeons is coming to Xbox One, Windows 10 PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Unlike the original game, there’s no crafting or building as players simply venture into procedurally generated dungeons and fight off hordes of foes. Weapons and armor can be discovered and enchanted for various effects, giving a nice action RPG feel to it all. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
