Capcom’s Monster Hunter World will finally be in the eager hands of console gamers on January 26th when the console versions release worldwide. Though the PC version is out in Autumn 2018, there have been plenty of questions as to whether the epic hack and slash title could ever come to the Nintendo Switch.
Co-directors Kaname Fujioka and Yuya Tokuda discussed the same with IGN and noted that since the game had a near-four year development cycle, the team committed to the Xbox One and PS4 early. This was before the Switch was even revealed to exist.
“We don’t have any plans for the Switch at the moment. Part of the reason is that the title has been in development for almost four years. At the time we had to commit to our hardware choices, we decided on using the most powerful current generation consoles available at the time, which was PS4 and Xbox One. So [the decision was made] before the Switch was even announced or on sale.”
Of course, it isn’t just a matter of the Switch existing or not. Monster Hunter World was designed specifically for its current platforms. It’s not simply a matter of fitting the game onto the Nintendo Switch (or at least that’s the current impression we’re getting).
“It’s also because for every title we decide what [hardware is the best fit] for the concept. We don’t just look at everything. It’s more like, ‘If we want to achieve this kind of game concept, where’s the best place to achieve that?’ For this title, the PS4 and Xbox One were the best fit for us.”
Monster Hunter World, like most games in this age, has a day one patch that weighs 815 MB. It’s pretty important – you’ll need to download it to play online – so make sure that’s queued up beforehand. What are your thoughts on the game potentially heading to the Nintendo Switch?
