Mortal Kombat 11 Will Have Pre-Set Custom Variations in Ranked Online Matches

The upcoming fighter has slightly different options available for online play.

NetherRealms Studios’ newest installment in the long-running fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat 11 just had its open beta, (it was pretty solid), and has ton of customization options, with the beta alone having multiple costumes, poses, and moveset variation to play with. The final version, though, will have multitudes more, with some that are dedicated purely for online play. It hadn’t been clear until now how custom variations would translate to the competitive side of Mortal Kombat 11, but through Game Informer, NetherRealm have revealed how they’ll handle this in ranked online play.

While players can use any variation they create in local and casual online matches, for ranked and tournament play, NetherRealm will create a set of pre-built variations for each character. Every character will have at least two pre-sets using the same three-slot system as custom variations. Lead designer John Edwards promises that ranked play won’t be limiting despite that, and that each variation is done with balancing in mind.

“They’re definitely well thought-out, it’s not like we just went ‘Oh, cool, these three things look cool, slap those in,'” said Edwards. “They are thought out and planned to create the best variety of gameplay within the system that we have.”
