By all accounts, the next generation of console gaming is not too far away. Development kits for the PS5, at the very least, have already been sent out, and we can only assume that the same is true for the next Xbox as well. Early details of the PS5’s specs have also suggested that the system’s architecture overall will be similar in nature to that of the PS4, which means that developers across the industry should have a much easier time adjusting to the new hardware.
That’s certainly how Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick feels as well. Speaking during the conference call in their latest quarterly financial meeting, Zelnick was asked about the impact new technology and hardware might have on those who’ll have to work with it to make games for it, and Zelnick was confident in his response, saying that he doesn’t believe it will be particular disruptive.
Zelnick stated that their developers are “pretty fluent with technology at this point”, before going on to mention that though transitions have been troublesome in the past, recent transitions have been significantly easier.
“I don’t expect it will happen here,” he said when speaking of whether the upcoming transition might prove to be another troublesome one. “We’ll be mindful of the change. But it wouldn’t be determinative of what we would do.”
We should learn more about what that transition might entail soon. While Sony have already started pulling back the curtain on the PS5, Microsoft will (probably) be revealing their new console at their E3 conference in less than month. Stay tuned for continued updates.
