NieR Automata Has Now Shipped 1 Million Copies Worldwide

Well, that's a surprise.

Square Enix confirmed today that NieR Automata, the sequel to the cult hit RPG from the previous generation, has now shipped one million copies worldwide, across digital and retail. Given that the game is the latest by eccentric director Yoko Taro, who is known for making beloved eccentric games with cult followings that don’t sell, and Platinum Games, who are known for making beloved eccentric games with cult followings that don’t sell… well, this is actually a) a surprise, and b) incredible news.

It seems like for once, people have flocked to quality- NieR Automata was widely acclaimed, after all. Its high sales contribute to the narrative that Japanese gaming is resurgent again– if a game like NieR can sell a million copies worldwide, there’s no question about that anymore (Japanese games had already been dominating the year on the critical reception front).

NieR Automata is out now, on PlayStation 4 and PC.
