Hardware and software sales data for the month of August in the United States is in, courtesy of the NPD Group (via GamesBeat), and there is little to no change in the status quo. The Nintendo Switch was, as it has been for few months running, the highest selling console in the US for the month of August.
Year-to-date, the Switch is still the highest selling console, and is also the only console to have seen a year-over-year increase for both, YTD sales, and August sales. Beyond Switch, hardware spending has continued to deteriorate. With Microsoft and Sony both gearing up for next gen releases and the Xbox One and the PS4 nearing the end of their active life cycles, sales for both consoles have slowed down considerably.
Total hardware spending in August 2019 stands at $167 million, which is down 22 per cent from August 2018. Meanwhile, total year-to-date spending for the year is currently at $1.6 billion, which is also down year-over-year, by 21 per cent.
