This year’s been great for all three consoles — the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch have all sold well through the year — however next year, Nintendo will assert its dominance over the console market for the first time in ten years. Strategy Analytics’ Global Game Console Market Forecast predicts that next year, Nintendo will come in with the top selling console globally, beating the PS4.
The Switch, according to this report, will sell 17.3 million units worldwide, eking narrowly ahead of the PS4, which will sell 17.1 million units worldwide. As Strategy Analytics points out, this will mark the first time since 2009 that Nintendo has a leading console on the market.
But while Nintendo and Sony are duking it out for a hotly contested first place spot, it sounds like, according to this report’s projections, the Xbox One will be a distant last place, with the Xbox One family as a whole selling 10 million units around the world through the year.
The report also says that, thanks to the Xbox One and PS4 winding down, shipments as a whole will begin to decline starting next year. However, by 2023, the report says that shipments should return to the same level as in 2019, driven by updates across PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
Remember, this is just a projection—no one can tell the future. Regardless, on the whole, it’s interesting to see what the state of the market is predicted to be by next year.
