There have been a lot of Xbox 720 and PS4 rumours running around lately, the most recent being that Microsoft and Sony will reveal their respective next generation consoles at E3 in a few months. Sony did stomp on the rumours a few days ago when Kaz Hirai said that they won’t be making any PS4 announcement at E3, but we still had hopes for the Xbox 720. Microsoft, however, has also said that they don’t have plans to announce a next gen system at E3 right now.
“At the moment we have nothing to announce,” said Microsoft’s senior director of marketing and PR Jose Pinero when asked about the same in an interview by Gamespot.
“What we have seen with the Xbox 360 is that the Kinect has extended the life of the console,” he continued. “Historically in the 6th or 7th year console sales start flattening or going down because it’s kind of the end of life.”
“With us launching Kinect a little bit over a year ago, what we saw was a resurgence with Xbox 360. It makes 360 a brand new console if you think about Kinect and you think about the new dashboard and the new UI that we launched this past November. It’s like having a brand new console.
“We want that box to be the ultimate entertainment device in your house, giving you games, movies, tv shows, music, sports, and all kinds of entertainment. So I think there’s a lot more that we’ll see on Xbox 360,” Pinero concluded.
Well, we could always get a surprise announcement. Game developers and publishers do lie a lot these days (David Jaffe, I’m looking at you).
