NPD January 2014 Report: PlayStation 4 Sells Double of Xbox One, Software Sales Plummet

PS4 leads hardware sales in the United States.

According to the NPD’s January 2014 report, which measures sales of consoles and software in North America, the PlayStation 4 sold double of the Xbox One and was the highest selling console of the month. As a whole, hardware sales saw a 17 to 47 percent normalized climb year on year to reach a $241 million revenue.

Regarding the success, SCEA senior VP of PlayStation brand marketing Guy Longworth said to VentureBeat that, “Demand for PlayStation 4 remains incredibly strong as it was No. 1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor, and remains the cumulative leader, according to today’s NPD report. Although PS4 remains severely constrained at retail, we are working hard to refresh supply as quickly as possible.”

Software sales were down though, with a 1 percent year-on-year decrease to sales of $664 million at retail. In terms of the long run, it’s a 21 percent drop due mostly to the lack of high profile releases. The NPD only accounts for retail sales and not digital downloads or DLC sales so it’s likely the figures aren’t as rough. Stay tuned for more details.
