The NPD Group’s report for video game software and hardware sales in the United States for May 2018 is finally in. Surprisingly enough, despite so-so reviews, Undead Labs’ State of Decay 2 proved a major success for Microsoft. It was the number one selling game for May with launch month sales almost double that of its predecessor.
God of War was still the second best-selling title of the month and is second in year-to-date sales (with Far Cry 5 coming in at first). Detroit: Become Human was also a strong success with 20 percent higher sales than Heavy Rain, the developer’s previous best-seller in launch month sales.
The Nintendo Swift’s software growth was 90 percent year-on-year, bringing in the company’s highest software revenue for May since the Wii in 2011. Only physical sales were tracked for Nintendo’s titles though – Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition and Mario Kart 8 all figure in the top 10 for May 2018. Overall, software spending was at $2.2 billion, up 7 percent compared to May 2017. Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter World and God of War are currently the best-selling games of 2018.
