Speaking to Tech Radar, Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey has revealed that mobile CPUs will advance far enough that by the end of the next generation of consoles, they will outpower them.
“If you look at the rate of how fast mobile phone technology has been advancing, I would be willing to bet that by the end of this console generation there are going to be mobile processors that far outpower them.”
Luckey also discussed how more powerful portable devices could lead to Oculus Rift running on its own. These computations could even possibly surpass that of a living room system. “It won’t be too many years before you can get a much better experience than a console in a headset that has everything built into it and is still cheaper than a console.”
The virtual reality headset Oculus Rift will be releasing in 2014 for PC, with rumours of a similar VR headset being developed for PS4.
