Overwatch 2 Story Mode Will Feature Multiple Character Perspectives

The story will be experience "through all of these characters' eyes" as per lead writer Michael Chu.

Blizzard Entertainment announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019 but you could be excused for thinking it was an expansion or huge update. After all, legacy players will have access to all of the new modes, maps and heroes. All cosmetics and unlocks will also carry over into the new game. The biggest paid addition is the Story Mode, which sees a resurgent Overwatch battling threats worldwide.

We’ve seen some of what the Story Mode has to offer, particularly in Rio de Janeiro when the team meets Lucio. Players choose from Reinhardt, Tracer, Mei and Lucio to repel Null Sector’s attack. This is one example of how Blizzard is working on exploring different character perspectives in the story.

Speaking to Game Informer, lead writer Michael Chu said the story will also look at which heroes have responded to the Recall and the shape of the world following the organization’s fall. The story will be seen “through all of these characters’ eyes” and we’ll also see more of their relationships as they work together as team. Though we don’t know how long the Story Mode will be, director Jeff Kaplan previously said that it will be “a complete story experience like you would expect from any AAA blockbuster game.”

Overwatch 2 is in development for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. The team currently has “no idea” about the release date so stay tuned for more information in the coming year.
