Overwatch Competitive Play Season 8 Has Begun, Matchmaking Changes Revealed

Skill Rating differences between the highest and lowest ranked players on teams has been changed.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch closed 2017 with the launch of Competitive Play’s eight season. Simply complete ten placement matches (and collect your rewards from last season) to receive your rank.

Competitive Play has always had its ups, downs and irritating bugs. This time around, Blizzard is changing how matchmaking according to players’ skill rating works. The difference between the highest and lowest skilled players in the same team has been reduced. This means that in the Bronze to Diamond bracket, there will be a difference of 1000 Skill Rating. The number goes down at higher tiers with 500 SR differences for Masters and 250 SR differences for Grandmaster.

Theoretically this should mean that you’re more likely to be matched with players of similar skill. It remains to be seen how this will work in the lower brackets though. Also, it doesn’t help lower skilled players can still party up with their Grandmaster friends. You can check out all the changes to matchmaking here and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
