Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch has a pretty strong player-base across consoles and PC. Given how other games like Fortnite: Battle Royale have taken steps to implement cross-play support, has Blizzard ever considered adding the same to its hero shooter? According to game director Jeff Kaplan, it’s definitely something the team finds “exciting” to pursue.
Speaking to Eurogamer at BlizzCon 2018, Kaplan said, “We’re super-excited about what’s going on with cross-play in all sorts of different games, from Rocket League to Fortnite, and we are constantly in discussions with the first-parties, Microsoft and Sony, to see where they’re at and gauge where their temperature is at. It’s something that would be very exciting for us to pursue.”
As for whether Overwatch would definitively receive cross-play support or not, Kaplan stated again that the interest was there. “We are definitely having conversations that we’re interested in the thought of it.” It’s not simply a matter of time then, but it’s good to know that this something the development team has in mind.
Overwatch had its fair share of announcements over the weekend. Along with a new cinematic short called “Reunion”, Blizzard announced a new hero, Ashe, who would be joining the roster. The DPS hero employs a long-range lever-action rifle that can be hip-fired or used to snipe. She also has B.O.B., a large Omnic bodyguard, to call in and wreck shop.
