Overwatch Dev Undecided on Additional Monetisation Post-Launch

Blizzard choosing to focus on fun gameplay over monetisation for the moment.

Blizzard Entertainment announced recently that its multiplayer shooter Overwatch would have future heroes and maps as free content updates, though it was unsure on the exact timeline and nature of this new content.

Speaking to Eurogamer, game director Jeff Kaplan said the development team is satisfied the current model but that it was unsure with regards to some form of monetisation in the future.

“We haven’t locked in exactly whether there’ll be additional monetisation after launch or not,” said Kaplan. “Some of that is because we want to watch the launch itself and see how successful that is, and see what sort of player base we end up with and see how engaged they are.

“Our biggest concern with Overwatch isn’t about how many ways in which we can monetize people, but making sure that the game is really fun. From there, it’s easier to figure out what to do.”

The beta for Overwatch will start up again in January 2016 and Blizzard will look into more content if there are requests from players for as much. Overwatch is currently slated to release for Xbox One, PS4 and PC in Q1/Q2 2016.
