PlatinumGames Receives Capital Investment From Tencent To Aid With Self-Publishing

The Japanese studio will, however, retain its independence.

PlatinumGames recently promised that they’d have “big news” to share about several things in early 2020, and while we’re going to have to wait little longer as far as updates on their games are concerned, they have indeed shared some pretty big news. The Japanese developer has announced a partnership with Chinese giant Tencent.

The partnership comes in the form of Platinum receiving capital investment from Tencent. The studio plans to use these extra funds to expand into self-publishing – something they’ve expressed interest in several times in the past – and to “strengthen [their] foundation as a business.” The studio also hopes the partnership will give them “a wider global perspective.”

In spite of the injection of funds from Tencent, PlatinumGames will retain their independence, which is something that the partnership will have “no effect” on, with the studio stating that it will “continue operations under our current corporate structure.”

PlatinumGames are currently working with Nintendo and Square Enix on upcoming titles Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall respectively, though they also have a new unannounced game in the works- which, apparently, is one of several such projects.
