PlayStation 5 Price Increase Unlikely to Affect Projected Sales – Analyst

While Microsoft is unlikely to raise prices of its current line-up of Xbox Series X/S consoles, Sony's sales forecast will likely be unaffected by the PS5's price hike.

In light of Sony’s recent announcement of the PlayStation 5 getting price increase in some territories, analysts have started releasing statements giving their own analysis on how this might affect sales of the console going forward.

One such analyst—Ampere research director for games Piers Harding-Rolls—stated that he doesn’t believe that it will affect sales of the PS5 going forward. In a post on Ampere’s website, Harding-Rolls states that Sony’s PS5 sales forecast for the rest of the year would likely be unaffected.

“While we believe there will be disappointment for some consumers that have been trying to buy a PS5 without success, or that were saving to buy the console just in time for the price to increase, the high pent up demand for Sony’s device means that the price increase of around 10% across most markets will have minimal impact on sales of the console,” states Harding-Rolls. “We expect Sony’s sales forecast for the PS5 to remain unchanged.”

It is worth noting that Sony’s move to raise PS5’s prices in some regions can be attributed to a number of reasons, including issues in its supply chain and the inflation felt throughout the world.

Harding-Rolls also believes that Microsoft will likely try to take advantage of the PS5’s price increases, and will try to take proposition its Xbox Series S, alongside services like Xbox Game Pass as value-oriented purchases. Recently, Microsoft said in a statement that it has no plans to increase Xbox Series X/S prices.
