PlayStation VR2 Releasing in 2023 as per DSCC CEO

DSCC's Ross Young noted big jumps in VR display shipments this year "despite delays to 2023 at Apple and Sony" and forecasts a "big jump" in 2023.

Sony officially revealed PlayStation VR2 this past January after months of rumors. Other major announcements include Horizon: Call of the Mountain being in development for the head-mounted display courtesy of Firesprite Studios and Guerrilla Games. However, Sony has yet to confirm when the hardware will launch.

Bloomberg indicated Holiday 2022 release while PSVR Without Parole (which accurately leaked the HMD’s specs before the announcement) reported that it would launch in Q1 2023. Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, is also seemingly leaning towards the latter. On Twitter, Young noted that VR display shipments would rise by 50 percent this year “despite delays to 2023 at Apple and Sony.”

A “big jump” has also been forecast for 2023, likely due to the new HMDs releasing by then. Take things with a grain of salt, as usual, but pushing back the release of PlayStation VR2 wouldn’t be strange. Sony dealt with supply issues for the PS5 last year and likely wants to increase its user base to increase the chances of PSVR’s success.

We’ll have to wait for more details so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out what former Valve writer Chet Faliszek said about the HMD when trying it at GDC 2022.
