In the rest of the world, Microsoft’s Xbox One, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 are fierce, bitter rivals, engaged and locked on in an ugly war for supremacy, backed by their hordes of millions of vocal fanboys.
In China, on the other hand, this won’t be the case. Or well it won’t effectively be the case, as it turns out that the company that sells the Xbox One in the country, Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group, will in fact be the company that will also be selling the PlayStation 4 in the region.
Some clarity, courtesy of Kotaku– the Xbox One is sold by BesTV, a media service that essentially manages and handles sales and distribution, alongside release and services, for the console in the region; the PS4 will be sold by Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group, which will play a similar role for it that BesTV plays for Xbox One. The catch? Both are in fact subsidiaries of the aforementioned Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group.
Speaking about this unique monopoly over interactive entertainment in the living room, SMEG said that its aim was to expand the games industry in the region, though understandably enough, it was a bit woolly on the specifics.
So… well, so much for that console war, right guys?
