Sony recently held a corporate strategy meeting with President and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida confirming that “compelling lineup” of PS5 titles would be revealed soon. Perhaps more interesting is how Yoshida described the console’s 3D audio capabilities, noting that it would work with haptic feedback and speed to provide “game experiences that were not possible before.”
“Sound is also an important part of immersion. By installing a customized 3D audio processing unit in PS5, we have made it possible to deliver diverse and sophisticated 3D audio experiences. Players can experience sound that moves from in front to behind, above to below and all around them.
“By combining speed, haptics and sound, we can further improve on the wonderful experience available on the PS4, making the PS5 a truly next generation console by providing game experiences that were not possible before.”
Yoshida further stated that titles which leveraged this “new gaming experience” were currently in the works by first and third party developers. We’ve already heard praise for the console’s custom Tempest Engine from developers and composers alike. Naughty Dog audio lead Robert Krekel also hinted at the opportunities of integrating audio with haptic feedback when the DualSense was first revealed.
Hopefully, Sony will reveal these titles in the coming weeks (with rumors pointing to some kind of event in June). The PS5 is currently slated to release this holiday season. Recently, Epic Games showcased demo for Unreal Engine 5 running in real-time for the console. You can check that out here.
