Sony have been among the biggest supporters of virtual reality in the gaming industry in recent years, and they’ve made no attempt to hide the fact that they’re going to continue investing in and supporting VR for some time to come- especially since they’ve also confirmed that the PS5 will indeed support PSVR.
A recent report by Bloomberg suggests that those investments might bear fruit sooner than we’d have though. Though much of the report is about how Sony is struggling to keep the PS5’s price low due to increased productions costs, it also touches upon PSVR 2, saying that Sony is planning to release new PlayStation VR headset after the PS5 has gone on sale. It’s worth noting that last year, Sony said it had no plans to launch a PSVR 2 alongside the PS5, so the timeline of the latter’s release – if this report should prove to be accurate – should be interesting to see.
Given how unnaturally silent and secretive Sony has been about its next-gen plans, there’s no telling when (or if) we’ll hear about their plans for PSVR. But given how well it’s done for them, and how they want to keep investing in it, it isn’t too much of a leap to imagine that they’re probably going to want to sell a better, more powerful variant to go alongside the PS5 down the road.
