Quantum Break PR On Comparison to Uncharted 4 Animations, Explains The Difficulties They Faced

Remedy's Thomas Puha discusses challenges the studio faced compared to Naughty Dog.

Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is out next week and already garnering positive praise for its animation quality. Naturally this has prompted comparisons to Remedy Entertainment’s Quantum Break.

It started with tweet sent out by Remedy’s head of PR Thomas Puha where he pointed out that Uncharted 4 had 27-28 animators credited while Quantum Break only had four. This prompted the response of both games’ visual quality reflecting that, to which Puha said, “Well and they are on their fourth game and second PS4 game. QB was our first and also first on Xbox One. That was tough.”

He also pointed out that, “It’s not just about numbers. I think in general ppl have so little idea of game technology and development. Understandably.” Puha also confirmed that surface capture was used for facial animations.

It’s also a case of the technologies of both engines. “Our engines animation systems are limited, which severely limits animators potential. They did amazing work in QB.”

Finally, Puha noted that location had a lot to do with the number of animators available. “Another thing is, we are in Finland. We got lots of engineers but animators are scarce. No such industry here unlike LA.”
