Replaced Developer Explains Delay to 2024 in New Statement, Offers Development Update

Replaced developer Sad Cat Studios reveals that it delayed the game because it "can't afford to release a sub-par game".

While upcoming 2.5D sci-fi platformer Replaced was revealed to have been delayed to 2024 back in August, developer Sad Cat Studios has released a new statement to help explain the delay. The statement also gives us an update on the game’s development. In its statement, the studio mentions that the fact that Replaced is its first game puts quite a bit of stress on the development team, and that it can’t afford to release a sub-par game.

“After Replaced initial announcement in 2021 and its follow-up trailer in 2022 we had this incredible high bar of community’s expectations,” says the studio in its statement on social media platform X. “And at this point we knew that we can’t afford to release a sub-par game. We truly want Replaced to be something special and memorable for everybody. This is our first game, and we want to make every aspect of it the best it can be.”

The statement goes on to talk about the game’s scope, and wanting to avoid the trap of over-promising on features and then under delivering on the game. The studio states that the majority of the game’s systems are now functional, and that the team now is in an intense asset production phase.

Replaced being delayed was originally revealed thanks to a quarterly fiscal report from parent company Thunderful Group last month. While the game was originally slated for release in 2022, it was delayed to 2023. The new 2024 release window is the second delay being faced by Replaced.

Replaced is making its way on to PC and Xbox Series X/S, and will be available to play through PC and Xbox Game Pass at launch.
