As the biggest new release of last week, it’s no surprise that Resident Evil Village has topped the weekly charts for physical video game sales in the UK, as per data provided by Gfk (via GamesIndustry). It is, in fact, the second biggest retail launch in the UK for the year, trailing behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
49% of all Resident Evil Village’s physical sales were on PS5, 31% on PS4, and 20% on Xbox consoles. Capcom’s survival horror title has also enjoyed the third biggest retail launch for a PS5 game in the UK to date, trailing behind Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It has also already become the seventh highest selling PS5 game at retail in the UK in terms of lifetime sales. It’s Xbox Series X/S retail launch is also the second biggest for the console, trailing behind Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and is the third highest selling Xbox Series X/S game at UK retail to date.
When compared to other recent Resident Evil releases, its launch sales are less impressive, owing to the drastic rise in digital sales as compared to physical over the past year or so. Though its physical launch sales are 76% higher than last year’s Resident Evil 3, they’re 25% less than Resident Evil 2, and 40% less than Resident Evil 7. If the game’s impressive Steam launch is any indication, however, it’s likely that with digital sales factored in, it’ll be a much better showing overall.
Meanwhile, New Pokemon Snap, which debuted on top of the charts last week, has fallen down to second place, while Returnal, which debuted in second place last week, has fallen out of the top 10 entirely, taking fifteenth place.
