Housemarque returned with another episode of HouseCast, this time talking about the origins of Returnal and its early development. Director Harry Krueger has all of the details but there’s also some new gameplay to see. Check it out below.
Much like previous showings, the gameplay showcases fast-paced movement and bullet hell-like scenarios. However, along with a more roguelite approach, Housemarque is embracing a darker side of sci-fi than usual (which is in line with the game’s earlier name, “Dark Planet“). Elements of psychological horror are also present as Selene must battle against all kinds of creatures to survive. And some of them are just agile as her.
There’s also a glimpse of some environmental story-telling as Selene happens upon what seems to be a past event. Returnal is currently slated to release on March 19th 2021, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The developer recently revealed gameplay and other story elements at The Game Awards – you can check that out here.
