Rogue-Like Metroidvania Dead Cells Will Receive Mod Support

Motion Twin currently has "limited, basic mod support" working internally.

If there are two genres that have had more than enough games to last a lifetime, it’s rogue-like and Metroidvania games. That being said, Motion Twin’s Dead Cells is perhaps the best example of the genre, combining an awesome sprite-based style with stellar combat.

Set to release in the coming months, the game is currently in Steam Early Access. On top of all the major features added, the developer has announced plans to add mod support. It currently has “limited, basic mod support” working internally but needs to sort out several issues before releasing it to all players.

“Currently even very minor updates break compatibility instantly. Which is kind of a deal breaker. Once we’ve fixed that, we will release the tools into the wild along with some basic documentation. Hopefully, as early as this month. So, if you’re interested in modding Dead Cells, please stick around, we will need your feedback to get this right.”

Mac and Linux support, along with the return of the pixel art font (which was replaced by a more modern-looking format in the “Baguette” update), has also been discussed. While the extent of mods remains to be seen, it’s still cool to see Motion Twin working to implement this before launch. Dead Cells is currently slated to release in August for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
