Rare’s Sea of Thieves may have its share of technical issues, with the developer releasing an update that requires re-downloading the game client, but it’s still popular. It was revealed in a recent developer update with studio head Craig Duncan and executive producer Joe Neate that the shared world action adventure hit 1 million players in the first 48 hours.
“We have seen unprecedented numbers coming in to Sea of Thieves and playing Sea of Thieves. The interest has been insane; the amount of people playing has been mind-blowing,” as per Neate. This could also be due to the game’s availability on Xbox Game Pass. If you’ve never tried Game Pass, there’s a free two week trial available. Otherwise, it’s $9.99 per month which is still much cheaper than owning the game for $60. And no, breakdowns of Game Pass players versus those who paid full price weren’t revealed.
This is a testament to the interest that Sea of Thieves generated regardless. Despite conducting play tests, Rare revealed that at one point close to launch, around 5,000 players kept joining every minute. Thankfully, after some rough server issues, Rare has its engineers working to ensure a smooth experience. What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know below.
