Sea of Thieves Won’t Be Free to Play, Rare Says

I didn't even realize this was something people were worried about.

This is honestly something that never even occurred to me, but apparently, it’s been on enough people’s minds that Rare decided to clear the air about it- apparently, the upcoming multiplayer adventure game by Rare, Sea of Thieves, won’t be free to play.

“One thing I can tell you is it’s not free-to-play. We didn’t say anything last year and then some people made stuff up, y’know, ‘it looks free-to-play!’ But we can clear that up – we will not be free to play,” said Rare’s design director Gregg Mayles to Eurogamer.

On one hand, it does make sense that people would be worried the game might be free to play- it was a game with a strong multiplayer bent announced as a cross platform title for Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs. Microsoft’s previous announcements of a similar nature at the time, Killer Instinct and Fable Legends, were both free to play- so maybe that’s why people were worried that that would be the case with this game, too.

Well, now we know that that is not true. Sea of Thieves is scheduled to launch on Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs in February 2017.
