Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s Newest Trailer Teases an Intriguing Story

Sekiro's latest story trailer hints at the protagonist's backstory.

Of all the ways that FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is choosing to set itself apart from other games made by the developer (read: Souls), perhaps the most intriguing is its decision to have a much more direct and active focus on story and storytelling. While the Souls games (and Bloodborne) were more about lore and passive and environmental storytelling, Sekiro is going for a much more traditional approach in terms of how it frames and weaves its narrative.

To give us an idea what to expect from the game when it arrives in a little over a month, FromSoftware have put out a story-focused trailer for it. The one minute-long teaser gives us a glimpse of what to expect from the game’s Sengoku-era setting, while also hinting at aspects of the protagonist’s backstory, and how the shinobi came to be in the service of his lord. It’s pretty interesting- check it out below.

A heavier narrative focus isn’t going to be the only way Sekiro differs from Souls, of course. From exploration and progression mechanics to combat and dynamic boss battles, there’s a lot else that the game is trying new things with. Read more about them through the links.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice launches on March 22 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
