Spec Ops: The Line multiplayer a check box, tacked-on – Yager designer

"There’s no doubt that it’s an overall failure."

Spec Ops: The Line’s lead designer, Cory Davis, has spoken out regarding the inclusion of multiplayer mode in the game, and has revealed that the studio wasn’t too keen on implementing it.

“The publisher was determined to have it anyway. It was literally a check box that the financial predictions said we needed, and 2K was relentless in making sure that it happened – even at the detriment of the overall project and the perception of the game,” he said to Polygon.

“There’s no doubt that it’s an overall failure. It sheds a negative light on all of the meaningful things we did in the single-player experience.”

Tacked-on multiplayer modes can be so terrible sometimes, just like we saw with Dead Space 2. It wasn’t developed by Yager, but by a third-party called Darkside Studios.

“I don’t even feel like it’s part of the overall package – it’s another game rammed onto the disk like a cancerous growth, threatening to destroy the best things about the experience that the team at Yager put their heart and souls into creating,” he revealed.

You can read our review of the game here, the game was pretty good.
