The Nintendo Switch topped the NPD Group’s hardware charts in the United States for last month. So it should come as no surprise that Super Mario Maker 2 dominated its software charts when it debuted. The NPD Group (as per Venture Beat) also revealed that the title had set a new launch month sales record for the series, besting Super Mario Maker on the Wii U and Super Mario Maker 3DS.
Interestingly, though it was the best-selling game for June 2019, only physical sales were accounted for. As for other releases, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled debuted in second place and represented the “highest launch month total in Crash Bandicoot franchise history”, according to analyst Mat Piscatella, beating out Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy’s debut on the PS4 in 2017.
One interesting bit to note is that despite Ubisoft reporting The Division 2 as the best-selling game of 2019 thus far, it was the 16th best-selling title in the United States for June. If nothing else, this indicates the game’s popularity around the rest of the world with “record highs” in engagement per player, as per Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad.
