While much has changed for the better in the System Shock Remake compared to the original, one gameplay feature that has persisted is the extremely limited inventory space. Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate this issue with both upgrades and strategies.
Micro Pocket Dimension V1 #1
The first of two permanent upgrades to your inventory capacity. This module is located on the Storage Deck of Citadel Station. Upon arrival on this floor, make your way to Storage Room #5 in the south-east corner. Ride the lift on the immediate left of the entrance to the area. At the top, navigate the walkways to the diagonally opposite end of the lift’s exit, to find a crate with the Micro Pocket Dimension V1 lying on it in plain sight. It will instantly and permanently expand the capacity of your inventory, by half a row.
Micro Pocket Dimension V1 #2
The second upgrade to your inventory capacity is a little more complex to acquire. The module is located in one of the three massive domes on the Executive Deck. The section, known as Delta Grove, has a man-sized chess set in its center. Playing as green, you will need to win a game that is already in progress against the AI playing the orange pieces, in order to unlock a door to the rear right of the room with the Micro Pocket Dimension V2 inside. Like many of the puzzles in the game, there is no single solution, especially since the piece locations are randomized for each playthrough. You can elect to save-scum it, and then win through trial and error. If you choose to play it fair and square, note that losing the game resets the board, forcing you to play a full round from start to finish. Winning also nets you the En Passant achievement.
Cargo Lift
As you move between decks using the elevator you can use the cargo lift to store items that you do not have an immediate need for, such as any weapons with no or limited ammunition, or medical kits beyond a certain requirement. The items placed inside are persistent, and will not be lost. They can also be accessed at any time, as long as you can make your way back to the elevator, thus functioning as a sort of moving stash point that is never too far away.
Storage Crates And Corpses
This is a last resort option, since it involves traveling back and forth between locations in a game with relatively long load times. Both crates and corpses are persistent and can be used as storage, if you can memorize their locations. Your ideal choices will be spots that are close to an elevator and on centralized decks like Cargo and Flight Deck, so as not to have to backtrack too far to reacquire something you need.
Inventory Management
Even the two upgrades mentioned above will not ease your hoarding habits, so here are a few tips to help with managing what little space you do have in your inventory.
- Remember to stack items that can be stacked, since the game does not do so automatically. Even while stacking, not all items stack to the same maximum amount, so you will need to test the limits of each item type.
- While you can and should scrap or dispose of unwanted or unnecessary junk, be alert and cautious while doing so, since it is possible to lose quest items. This can halt your progress completely in some cases, forcing you to load an old save if you even have one.
