Meanwhile, Fools Theory wants to highlight "the parts that are great, should be retained, or are direct key pillars that can't be discarded."

While CD Projekt RED is working on a new Witcher trilogy, starting with Project Polaris, Fool’s Theory is busy on a remake of the first game. Developed on Unreal Engine 5, it will be open-world (unlike the original) and serve as a Its changes haven’t been outlined, but CEO Jakub Rokosz told EDGE that the studio plans to take out parts that are bad, outdated or “unnecessarily convoluted.”

“First and foremost, we need an honest, down-to-earth analysis of which parts are simply bad, outdated, or unnecessarily convoluted and need to be remade.” Of course, the developer also wants to highlight “the parts that are great, should be retained, or are direct key pillars that can’t be discarded.” The goal is to “create something that is both satisfying and still resonates with the feel of the original.”

The Witcher Remake has no release window or platforms, but CD Projekt RED president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński stated it will launch after Polaris. This is due to the remake’s development running “partially” in parallel to the next Witcher game and being based “in big part” on its technologies. As for Polaris, it’s aiming to enter full production this year.

CD Projekt RED is also working on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, Project Orion, also developed on Unreal Engine 5. It still has a “lot of work” to be done with no release window announced. In the meantime, a new update is available for the first game.
CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński says the remake is "based in big part on technologies from Polaris" and will be developed "partially in parallel."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition is out on December 14th, bringing the popular RPG to Xbox Series X/S and PS5. But there’s plenty more to come for fans of the series. The next Witcher title, codenamed Polaris, is being developed on Unreal Engine 5 and will have two more sequels released within six years after its launch.

There’s also The Witcher Remake, formerly Project Canis Majoris. It’s also developed on Unreal Engine 5 by Fool’s Theory, a third-party studio formed by ex-Witcher developers. Unlike the original release, it will be an open-world title.

However, it may be a while before it sees release. During CD Projekt Group’s Q3 2022 earnings call, president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed that The Witcher Remake would launch after Polaris.

“Coming back to The Witcher Remake and when it will come. Yes, it will come after Polaris, which is a consequence of how we think about this project. I think The Witcher Remake will be based in big part on technologies from Polaris, so it will be developed partially in parallel to Polaris. But once Polaris is launched, everything for Polaris will be then in the final shape, and it will be partially reused in the remake.”

If the remake is already adapting tools used in Polaris, then the gap between releases may not be too long. Time will ultimately tell, so stay tuned for more details.
