These games prove that misery truly loves company.

Ah, the act of surviving together. There’s nothing better than foraging, creating a base together and building a thriving community…before it all comes apart from death, disease or zombies. Even with all the terrible things that can happen, survival games are still immensely popular and have some of the most dedicated fan bases out there. Let’s take a look at 15 of the best survival games worth playing in co-op.

Don’t Starve Together

Expanding upon Klei Entertainment’s excellent survival experience, Don’t Starve Together is more than just the base game with co-op mechanics. It offers three modes – Survival, which turns dead players into ghosts that drain the sanity of the living; Wilderness, which puts each player in a random location; and Endless, where players can respawn endlessly. With its plethora of content – from DLC like Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked and Hamlet to new characters and free updates – Don’t Starve Together remains one of the premiere multiplayer survival experiences.

PS Plus has one of its more disappointing games in April.

Last month saw one of PS Plus’s strongest months on record, because in March, which marked the first month of the service without free PS3 and PS Vita games, Sony offered The Witness and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered to subscribers. Expectations can naturally be high, given how March went, as well as the fact that Sony has to only support PS4 with free games now.

Which makes this month’s showing, announced today, that much more disappointing. The PS Plus games for the month of April are The Surge, the science fiction Souls-like from Deck13, and Conan: Exiles, the survival open world multiplayer action game in the Conan universe.

Both these games are good. They’re actually perfect for PS Plus in that they’re the kinds of games most people are probably interested in playing, but not in paying for. But when Sony is now offering a third of the number of games they used to, and half the games the competition does, they can’t just offer “fine”. They need to be better, and these games don’t cut it.

You’ll be able to download these games starting April 2.

Switch manages to have a reasonable hold post-Obon week.

In the wake of Obon week, sales of games and hardware in Japan usually fall off pretty sharply, but Nintendo’s Switch seems to have maintained its weekly level of sales reasonably well. Where last week, the Switch sold 54,000 units, this week it sold 46,000 units- so it’s within the same range.

The PS4 came in at second place, with almost 23,000 units sold, and the 3DS weakly rounds off the top three, with just under 7,800 units sold. On the software front, by a miraculous confluence of release timing and weekly drops for other software, Conan Exiles came in in first place, with the Switch version of My Hero: One’s Justice coming in in second place (the PS4 version charted in at fifth). Meanwhile, the usual suspects- Minecraft, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Kirby: Star Allies, Mario Tennis Aces– all showed off strong legs this week, too.

Not exactly a leisurely walk through the desert, but still a thrilling one.

Being a game in the survival genre – which isn’t doing too well these days – and being one that’s only now come out of Early Access – which usually means a game is shamelessly unfinished and buggy – should have spelt utter doom for Conan Exiles. At the very least, it was all pointing toward the fact that the game wasn’t going to be very good, even if it wouldn’t be a complete mess. Surprisingly, pleasantly, none of that is true. Conan Exiles doesn’t do much that its precursors in the genre haven’t done, and simply by virtue of being a survival game, this isn’t the most accessible game out there, but once you get into it, it can keep you hooked for dozens of hours.

"Conan Exiles doesn’t do much that its precursors in the genre haven’t done, and simply by virtue of being a survival game, this isn’t the most accessible game out there, but once you get into it, it can keep you hooked for dozens of hours."

After you’ve created your custom character, the games starts off as the titular Conan (who you don’t see or hear much of for the rest of the game) sets you free from your bonds. You’re a criminal, who’s been crucified and left to die for your crimes in the harsh and untamed Exiled Lands, and after you’re set free, it’s up to you to find a way to survive everything the game throws at you consequently. And that’s all the setup there is- and all the setup you need. Where you go and what you do after that is left entirely up to you, with the sole goal being survival.

You start off small, scrounging for food and water and clothes and the most rudimentary weapons, picking up any and all resources you can find in the environment and putting together whatever tools you can with what you have at your disposal. As you progress, though, Conan Exiles grows, going from being a game about the basest survival to becoming one about building, maintaining, and conquering. Within a few hours, you start worrying about bigger things, like building a home for yourself, and that just keeps on growing, to the point where you’re building towers, bases, cities, and outposts.

When, where, and how you do that is your choice entirely. Other than providing you with a basic checklist of things to do while you play, there is no structure at all in the game. There are no quests, no developments of the story (primarily because there really is no story), and no end goal to work towards. For many players, that might be a bit of a turn off, as the game does tend to feel a bit aimless at times, especially in the first couple hours or so. But once you’ve understood the mechanics and grasped what the gameplay loop is all about (which won’t take long if you’ve played survival games before), Exiles really comes into its own.

"As you progress, Conan Exiles grows, going from being a game about the basest survival to becoming one about building, maintaining, and conquering."

The loop of collecting resources to build up your bases and make them stronger is a deeply addictive one. Seeing your settlement going from being just a collection of structures at first to becoming a full fledged fortress is truly gratifying. These settlements also get attacked quite often, so you always have to keep their defence in mind, which can entail building siege weaponry, erecting high walls, or capturing NPCs and turning them into slaves to raise a veritable army of sorts. Once you’ve spent a few hours playing the game, the mad scramble for basic survival becomes a thing of the past, and Conan Exiles becomes a game that is more about building and management.

But thankfully enough, it doesn’t plateau there. The world of Conan Exiles is a large one, and it is filled with opportunities for exploration, and going out in the world to do so always reaps new rewards. You might chance upon new resources you can make use of to build and craft new stuff, or you might find dungeons that hide precious loot, or you might run into bosses that yield valuable rewards upon being defeated. Before you venture out of your base and into the world to do these things though, the game demands that you plan ahead. Dressing according to the weather and the climate, for instance, is something that you must always keep in mind, as well as making sure you have the proper equipment, food, and weapons on your person before you venture out. All of this feeds into constant expansion and growth, making the loop a deeply engaging one.

There are some issues with Exiles though. For one, it is not a very accessible game. If you’ve played survival games like Ark and Rust before, you probably won’t agree with that, because not only would you have experience in the area, Conan is also a lot easier to get into than those two are. There are some QoL improvements over other games in the genre – for instance, crafting is done within the menu. By its very nature, though, Conan Exiles is a harsh and unforgiving game. You will die a lot, and all manner of things can prove to be deadly, from food poisoning to thirst to its brutal combat. For those who do not have much experience in this genre, at least the first few hours will test your patience. On top of that, the general feeling of aimlessness can also be a little off-putting. Sure, that gradually goes away as you begin to understand what the point of the game really is, but if you’re the kind of player who prefers their games to have at least some structure or some sort of a guided experience, Conan Exiles may not be for you.

"If you’re the kind of player who prefers their games to have at least some structure or some sort of a guided experience, Conan Exiles may not be for you."

Then there are the technical issues, of which there are plenty in the game. The locations in the game can look very beautiful, and the biomes genuinely do have a great deal of variation, but where most of that is down to the game’s art style, when it comes to the technical aspects, Exiles falters. Textures are often muddy and undefined, the frame rate can be very choppy at times, while some of the animations are quite jerky. There’s a lot of jank here. It’s a game with a lot of rough edges, and while I expect many of these issues to be addressed by constant patches and support from Funcom, as it stands right now these are hard to ignore.

Conan Exiles is a game that can potentially provide you with dozens of hours of gameplay. If you’re a veteran of the survival genre, you’ll find that it doesn’t do much – if not anything – that other games haven’t done before; but what it does, it does very well. If you’re new to the genre, you’ll probably find the game, by its very nature, a little aimless, and maybe a little intimidating. But for both these kinds of players, once you’re a few hours into the experience and find yourself caught deep in the ever-growing loot of survival, collection, building, and expanding, you’ll realize that getting past those issues is well worth it.

After entering Steam Early Access in early 2017, Funcom’s Conan Exiles is now finally available for PC, Xbox One and PS4. Given the number of issues at launch and expectations behind the release, the amount of work put into the game has been fairly noteworthy.

On Steam, Funcom celebrated the game’s launch by detailing the number of features added. The map size has gone from 15 square kilometers to 40 square kilometers, a feat accomplished thanks to the recent launch of the Swamp and volcano biomes (the latter housing the strongest metals). The Forgotten City of Xel-Ha and Lemurian City are other sights to experience.

About 60 resources, 195 building pieces, 150 consumables, 296 weapons, 245 player animations, 183 monsters and a whole range of other features have been added to the game since its Early Access launch. Check out the handy infographic below to see just how the final product stacks up to its first iteration. Creative director Joel Bylos teased that more would be coming as well, noting that “This is only the beginning.”

The hits just keep coming and May is looking to be fairly busy for gamers.

Another month, another slate of high profile releases that promise unforgettable experiences, retro classics and the opportunity to enslave our enemies. We’re less than two months away from E3 2018 and while the best is yet to come this year, May is still full of releases that you shouldn’t skip. Let’s take a look at the top 10 games releasing in the coming month.

Detroit: Become Human

Quantic Dream’s highly anticipated, narrative-based adventure has impressed us for a long time with its sleek visuals and production values. However, Detroit: Become Human promises more than just pretty graphics, its themes exploring the nature of humanity and free will via androids living in futuristic Detroit. Attaining sentience is one part of the journey for Kara but Connor is more about hunting down deviant androids as part of the police. Markus is a more revolutionary individual, seeking to free other androids from their captivity. The choices you make, how they’ll affect the outcome and replaying scenes to visit alternate story paths form a core part of the experience. Detroit: Become Human is out on May 25th for PS4 so we’ll find out just how emotionally involving its story really is.

State of Decay 2

It’s not the MMO/zombie survival game that we once heard rumblings of but that’s okay. Undead Labs’ State of Decay 2 will once again challenge players to survive in a large open world with three large maps to explore, numerous zombies to battle, survivor camps to manage and much more. The developer has promised that each map will roughly be the size of the first game’s map, which is pretty crazy. Couple this with the potential for new stories to be told via the survivors, crafting, new abilities, the potential to shift one’s base and four player co-op, and there will be a lot to go through once State of Decay 2 launches on May 22nd for PC and Xbox One.

Moonlighter

Imagine wanting to adventure into the dangerous arms of the world, spelunking through various depths and uncovering various unknown terrors. Your role isn’t that though – you’re meant to be a shop-keeper, selling items to the real adventurers. Of course, once the day comes and the desire can no longer be staved, it’s off to adventure. Moonlighter encapsulates this idea with a beautiful sprite-based art-style and combat that takes several cues from the old-school Zelda games. While it’s possible to explore dungeons and discover various items, the twist here is that you can take them back to your item shop and sell them for additional cash. This can then be used to fund further adventures with weapon and armour upgrades and much more. Moonlighter has an easygoing feel to its adventure, one that’s nonetheless addictive and challenging once you actually get into it. Look for it to release on May 29th for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

When a giant angry god of light and rebirth destroys your stronghold and leaves you for dead, what more can you do but chase it? As the sequel to the critically and commercially acclaimed computer RPG, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will offer a brand new region, the Deadfire Archipelago, to explore. You get your own boat to travel in, which can be customized and engage in naval battles. Players can now take on three sub-classes with their own skills, further develop companion relationships, and even steal ships from foes. If the first game was any indication, Pillars of Eternity 2 should be a massive adventure that embodies the spirit of classic RPGs like Icewind Dale and Baldur’s Gate.

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia

When Anglo-Saxons, Gaelic clans and Vikings clash in a huge battle, who wins? Well, history has kind of told us what happens but Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia will let us play that out as well. A turn-based campaign with real-time battles, Thrones of Britannia follows the Total War formula to a tee. You choose a faction, create armies, negotiate alliances and go about conquering everyone. With a whopping 10 factions with unique leaders, numerous routes to attain victory and many updates to mechanics like politics, recruitment, dilemmas and whatnot, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia should deliver when it releases for PC on May 3rd.

Conan Exiles

Conan Exiles hasn’t exactly had the smoothest early access period but it shows hope. The concept of surviving in the Hyborian Age, scavenging for food and water while making your way across a hostile land full of zombies, dragons and other enemies can be intriguing. Furthermore, any hostile NPCs you come across can be captured for various benefits as you chart out your metropolitan-like base. You can even use the power of your deity and command titanic avatars to crush enemies underfoot. Conan Exiles releases on May 8th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 and 2 (Switch)

It’s not enough for the Nintendo Switch to receive one compilation of the classic Mega Man titles. No, on May 22nd, it receives both. Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 features Mega Man 1 to 6 with a new Challenge Mode that offers scaling difficulties across refashioned segments from all six games. Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 features Mega Man 7 to 10 with all the playable characters, additional modes, a gallery for viewing art and much more. Honestly, not a bad deal if you want your fill of Mega Man on the go.

Dark Souls Remastered

We’ve had Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin and eventually Dark Souls 3 to cap off the trilogy. What better place to go than back to the beginning? Developed by QLOC, Dark Souls Remastered will have improved visuals thanks to higher quality textures and a 60 FPS frame rate. There will also be support for 4K and an increased multiplayer cap to accommodate six players. The Nintendo Switch version, developed by Virtuos, sadly won’t be out in May but at least PS4, Xbox One and PC players can re-experience the classic on May 25th.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset

The Elder Scrolls Online continues to expand, this time with a new expansion Summerset. Releasing for PC on May 21st, Summerset will see players travelling to the home of the High Elves, open for the first time in history, and encountering such groups as the Psijic Order to potentially learn new abilities. Crafting will also be expanded to include Jewellery Crafting which will further feed into your power fantasy. Other new content includes a 12 player Trial, new World Bosses, Public Dungeons and the new Abyssal Geysers group challenge.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Switch)

From its expert level design with distinct flow to its rewarding gameplay, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is truly a classic that more players should experience. Fortunately, with the Wii U release coming to Nintendo Switch on May 4th, we’ll have a chance to do just that. The Switch version doesn’t sport a ton of new features but you can play as Funky Kong. He has five HP and can hover, double-jump, breathe underwater and more, which helps to ease one’s self into the adventure. Regardless if you own a Switch, there’s no reason not to pick up this stellar adventure next week.

Conan Exiles is the upcoming survival game being developed by Funcom set in the universe created by Robert E. Howard. The game will soon leave Steam’s Early Access and Xbox Game Preview. Ahead of the official release of the game, Wccftech managed to interview the developers regarding some technical aspects of the game and how it will perform on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.

While Funcom had initially stated that the game would run at 4K resolution on the Xbox One X, they have now revealed that it will only run at 1440p. They explained the reason for this as follows, “We haven’t had time to push into the nuances of the hardware on Xbox One to get the utmost out of it, so we’ve stuck with the safer route of a smaller resolution upgrade with custom settings. ” On the PS4 Pro, the game will run at 1080p resolution.

Conan Exiles is set to release for the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on May 8.

Funcom discusses what sets apart Conan Exiles from other games in the genre.

Conan Exiles is the upcoming open world survival game being developed by Funcom. The company already has experience in working with the universe of Conan, having also developed the Age of Conan MMORPG. This is a game in which players play as an exile in The Exiled Lands as they struggle to survive, being surrounded by challenging conditions.

The game has been in Early Access for a while and is set to release soon on May 8. To learn more about the game’s development and how it will perform on the PS4 and Xbox One, Gamingbolt reached out to Funcom’s Communications Manager, Tor Egil Andersen who answered our questions about their game.

"We wanted to make a game which would be fitting with Robert E. Howard’s awesome world of Conan the Barbarian, and what could be more fitting than a brutal survival game like Conan Exiles?"

Conan Exiles had quite the rocky start when it first launched in Early Access. Could you tell us exactly what happened and how you overcame it?

Like most Early Access games Conan Exiles had its fair share of issues when it launched. Many of these were caused by server performance problems, and we had to find a new company to host the game’s official servers. But I would also say that Conan Exiles had a very good Early Access launch as well – it was the bestselling game on Steam for two weeks straight and the most streamed game on Twitch for several days. We have worked hard throughout Early Access with adding new content and fixing bugs, issues and exploits, and when the game launches on May 8th there will be a huge update adding tons of new content.

What motivated the shift from an MMORPG like Age of Conan to a more survival oriented multiplayer experience?

MMORPGs are massive games which can take many years to make and tens of millions of dollars to develop. They also need dedicated support for many years after launch (our oldest MMO is over 17 years old and is still alive and kicking). Funcom’s current strategy is to make games that take less time to develop, so we can publish them more often. We wanted to make a game which would be fitting with Robert E. Howard’s awesome world of Conan the Barbarian, and what could be more fitting than a brutal survival game like Conan Exiles?

Could you tell us some of the changes and new additions that Conan Exiles has seen since launching in early access?

Conan Exiles has gone through a ton of changes and has gotten 32 major updates since Early Access Launch. The biggest of these is the Frozen North, which increases the game’s size by about 70%. It hugely increases the map and introduces a ton of new enemies, gear, building pieces and much more. Other updates have added things like a new dungeon, siege warfare or a climbing system which allows players to climb anywhere. The biggest updates are still to come though, when we will introduce a complete revamp to the combat system and the launch date patch which introduces the new swamp and volcano areas plus much more.

What can you tell us about some of the planned features like sorcery, city life, The Purge and mounts? Will they be releasing sometime after the official launch?

We made a post about this recently, explaining in detail what will be in at launch and what will not: https://www.conanexiles.com/blog/conan-exiles-launch-beyond/ There is a lot of info there, so people should really read the article. In short, in addition to the new volcano and swamp area and new combat system, the new things coming in for launch are the purge, farming, a new religion, a perk system, war paint and a way to fast travel. Things like sorcery and mounts will not be making it in.

How have you been working to address issues like rubber-banding?

Rubber-banding is mainly an issue if you are playing on a poorly performing server, or if the server is running to many instances of the game (like our first official server provider was doing). There have been numerous server performance fixes throughout Early Access, and more are being worked on at the moment, who have not made their way to the live servers yet.

"A survival game is not the same without the opportunity for players to do PvP and brutal combat between players fits very well with the stories from the Conan universe."

Many players have complained about the overtly excessive grinding required for things like building. What changes have you made to address those concerns?

The general building cost was reduced considerably around the launch of the Frozen North update. The time it takes to build huge castles or cities is still considerable, but not as high as at the beginning of Early Access. Lots of new tools have been added, which makes gathering materials much faster and a new kind of thrall, which can carry lots of stuff for you, will be available at launch. If players band together and build as teams, the time it takes to build something great is considerably shortened. I have personally built massive cities on my own in god mode (you can build infinitely when using the admin panel) and have found that clans of players have built cities at the exact same spot as me which are many many times larger, without using admin powers at all. So it is definitely very possible to build big in Conan Exiles and you can be very creative with the vast amount of building pieces and placeables available (many times more than when Early Access launched).

PvP seems interesting especially with the ability to raid cities. How did the concept first come about and what improvements has it seen recently?

From the very beginning PvP was planned to play an important part in Conan Exiles. A survival game is not the same without the opportunity for players to do PvP and brutal combat between players fits very well with the stories from the Conan universe.

Since the start of Early Access PvP has seen many changes. You can now do siege warfare with trebuchets and grenades. You can build defences against Avatars where huge domes can protect your city from their attacks.

The main change to PvP is still upcoming though. The new combat system changes combat in profound ways, making it much more tactical and skill based. You will be able to do combos and add status effects depending on the attacks you make and weapons you choose. The new combat, which will go live before full launch on May 8th, is now available on our Testlive servers. The new combat system is a complete revamp, with all new animations and attacks, and it truly makes Conan Exiles as brutal as a Conan game deserves to be.

What are your thoughts on developing for the Xbox One (via Game Preview) as opposed to PC? Did any of the lessons learn help with the upcoming PS4 version?

Developing Conan Exiles for consoles is more challenging for us than developing for PC. The hardware restrictions alone can be quite tricky to meet in a game with such a large open world as Conan Exiles. The pipeline for making a game for Xbox One and PS4 is a lot more complex and convoluted than when making a game for PC and publishing it on Steam. The Game Preview program is a great way to do it more gradually though, and launching in Game Preview has helped us get ready for final launch on both Xbox One and PS4. We are getting help from a company called Coconut Lizard to make the PS4 version of the game.

With the number of survival games currently available, both single and multiplayer, how do you feel Conan Exiles stands out in the crowd?

Conan Exiles stands out in many ways. It has an incredibly diverse and beautiful world, filled with unique locations and lore. It of course has the Conan setting and universe. It already has a huge amount of building pieces and gear for players to craft, and at launch on the 8th of May it will have many more (different equipment pieces alone will number in the several hundreds). But I guess what will make it stand out most is the brutal and tactical melee combat system. When it goes live Conan Exiles will have a combat system unlike anything I have seen in any other survival game at least.

What can we expect from Conan Exiles in the future? Will there be any paid expansions or DLC?

I’m sorry but the only info I can give you on that is that we are currently looking into it.

"The game runs in 30 FPS for both PS4 and Xbox One. The resolution is 900p for Xbox One and 1080p for PS4."

What resolution and frame rate does Conan Exiles run on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro? Will you have separate modes for 4K and 1080p TV owners?

We are still working on this so I can’t give you final details yet. At the moment the Xbox One X version in Game Preview can run in 1440p resolution with 4k for the GUI.

And what resolution and frame rate does the base versions of PS4 and Xbox One run at?

The game runs in 30 FPS for both PS4 and Xbox One. The resolution is 900p for Xbox One and 1080p for PS4.

In your opinion, how much does the PS4 Pro differ from the Xbox One X?

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X are pretty similar. The Xbox One X represents a bigger jump from the base console though.

Microsoft had made it compulsory for developers to support the Xbox One and Xbox One X i.e cross compatibility. In case of Conan Exiles, do you think this will hold back the Xbox One X version in any way?

No, it has not held us back. We have already dealt with settings and resolution scaling in between high-end PCs, low-end PCs, the original Xbox One and PS4. We don’t have to make any additional compromises for Xbox One X because Conan Exiles is also running on Xbox One.

Xbox One X has a ton of memory on board (12GB in total and 8GB of that is available for games). Do you think high-end PC game developers such as yourself, will now be setting your PC memory requirements even higher in the future due to Xbox One X offering even higher memory allocations?

Xbox One X memory is shared in between CPU and GPU, unlike on PC. 8GB of shared memory is not more than higher end gaming PCs already have (4GB+ of VRam with 8GB or more of system memory is quite common now), so I do not anticipate PC memory usage to be significantly changed by the arrival of Xbox One X.

Any plans to support HDR on consoles?

We would very much like to, but we are not quite there yet. We are hoping to be able to support it for the launch of Conan Exiles on May 8th.

Is there anything else you want to tell us before we let you go?

We hope that people will play Conan Exiles when the game has its official launch on May 8th. It will be a vastly improved game from Early Access and Game Preview. The game will be available on both PC, Xbox One and PS4, and we hope people who want to play a truly brutal survival game will join us in the Exiled Lands.
