Headlining the update is the Hagental Base map, which has an emphasis on close-quarters combat with tight corridors and walls to destroy.

Battlefield Studios has released a brand new update for Battlefield 6 and Battlefield: REDSEC as part of Season 2: Nightfall. The update brings with it a host of content across both the regular multiplayer modes, as well as the battle royale title, including new map content, limited-time modes, weapons, vehicles, and more. For full details, check out the patch notes below.

Headlining Season 2: Nightfall is the Hagental Base map, which is going to be entirely underground and will revolve around close-quarters combat. Players will be able to blast through walls and cave in ceilings in their attempts to flank opposing squads. There are also plenty of corridors which can offer new options for repositioning, or opportunities for long, drawn out gunfights.

Battlefield: REDSEC will see an expansion to its map thanks to the addition of Defense Testing Complex 3 at Fort Lyndon. The new point of interest is a secret chemical testing facility located beneath the main battleground, and features a network of tunnels for traversal and combat.

The update will bring in a new playlist featuring a mix of Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, and Domination matches, all taking place in Hagental Base. Along with this, all of the matches will also have the new Darkness modifier active, cutting off most of the lights in the base. To counter this, players can make use of new tools like Night Vision Goggles. A new version of Gauntlet, set in Hagental Base with an emphasis on the Darkness modifier will also be available.

REDSEC will be getting a high-speed Gauntlet-styled experience dubbed the Red Bull Supermoto later in Season 2. Ostensibly a dirt-bike race, it will involve eight players competing against each other through three knockout rounds. The final stage of the mode will see four players remaining, battling it out for Red Bull-themed in-game rewards.

Season 2: Nightfall will bring with it two new weapons, both focusing on close-quarters combat: the CZ3A1 SMG, and the vz. 61 fully automatic sidearm.

There have also been other upgrades and improvements brought in with the patch, affecting various aspects from vehicle gameplay, to portable mortar and gadgets, progression and Battle Pass systems, UI and HUD, and audio, among other things.

To cap it all off, Battlefield Studios has announced a free trial period for Battlefield 6 starting on March 17th. Until March 24th, a limited version of the multiplayer shooter will be free to all players, featuring six game modes across four of the maps, which also include newer additions like Contaminated and Hagental Base.

The team behind one of last year's best shooters is paying close attention to what its players are saying, perhaps using that feedback well.

A recent interview with IGN might be good news to all you Battlefield 6 fans out there who are hoping for a turnaround of its fortunes ahead of Season 2’s next update, Nightfall, on March 17th.

Justin Wiebe, Ripple Effect’s studio design director, has high hopes for the title, highlighting how it is adopting a collaborative approach to its content that loops in a key component of any game: its players. “We’re listening, and we’re reacting, and it’s going to continue that way for a very long time…We’re getting amazing feedback from the community, and we’re constantly trying to strive to make the best game possible.”

Wiebe also emphasises Battlefield Studios’ willingness to pivot from established content or update roadmaps to better address pressing issues that may arise from feedback from its community about the game.

“It’s not like, ‘Hey, we crafted this massive plan, and we’re going to hold to it.’ It’s like, no. Anything can change based on what is going on with the community, what is going on with the feedback, and what we’re seeing from the game.”

While it’s heartening to see a studio place value in what its players have to say, it’s equally good to see developers being objective enough to take feedback in the spirit it was intended, and try to accommodate what the people playing its titles want as much as they can. We won’t have to wait too long to see if the approach is going to yield dividends, with Season 2 being one that carries a lot of weight owing to the game’s recent woes, and the recent “realignments” that have affected jobs across the board for Motive Studio, DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect.

Battlefield 6 might have had a good start, but its current content roadmap has had some adverse effects on its development teams.

Battlefield 6 had quite the start when it was released last year. Its campaign may not have managed to impress, but its multiplayer sure did, and the game soared to enviable heights in a crowded space.

But the last few months haven’t been kind to the title, with many aspects of its updates coming under fire for numerous issues, including, but not limited to, excessive monetization, the use of generative AI, and, funnily enough, a lack of regular content. However, EA has since attempted some damage control, delaying the Season 2 update to ensure it’s done right, while providing a content roadmap for the next three months.

However, it seems that the game’s struggles have bled on to the folks who worked hard to craft the experience that once had people heaping praises on it. An ongoing “realignment” effort has reportedly left many staffers across the numerous studios working on the game laid off from their jobs. An EA spokesperson, in a statement to IGN, had the following to say.

“We’ve made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community. Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities, and we’re continuing to invest in the franchise, guided by player feedback and insights from Battlefield Labs.”

Studios such as Motive Studios, Ripple Effect, Criterion, and DICE have been affected, according to sources speaking to IGN. Here’s to hoping that the minds behind a fairly solid shooter land on their feet, while Battlefield 6 manages to get out of its slump and back to being an entertaining title that comes with an extensive pedigree.

Fans of larger Battlefield maps can look forward to Golmud Railway, which is currently being tested through Battlefield Labs.

Celebrating the recent launch of Battlefield 6 Season 2, the developers at Battlefield Studios have published a new community update to take a look at initial reactions to the new content and changes. One of the big takeaways has been that the developers have seen praise for the sandbox variety, flanking routes, and vehicle interplay in the new Contaminated map. Players have also praised the map’s expanded available airspace, which allows pilots more room to maneuver while still keeping the ground-based combat balanced.

As for the future, Battlefield Studios has reaffirmed its plans to offer larger-scale experiences. As part of this, the Golmud Railway map will see continued testing through Battlefield Labs, and the developers have described it as “one of our most ambitious large-scale maps” for Battlefield 6. “Our focus is not just scale, but also ensuring it delivers strong vehicle depth and consistent pacing across the full playspace.”

Battlefield Studios has noted that it will continue to monitor four key aspects of Battlefield 6—movement, progression, Portal SDK, and Portal latency. While the first two largely revolve around in-game balance and how much fun players might be having with the progression systems, the latter two are more focused on making new Portal content available to players earlier, as well as ensuring that technical issues don’t mess with custom experiences.

Looking to the future, the next major content drop—dubed Nightfall—will bring its own set of changes to Battlefield 6. Along with the addition of night vision goggles and a dark map that will encourage players to use them, the update will also bring adjustments to the progression system to smoothen out the pacing and reduce unnecessary grind. Weapon Mastery progression, for instance, is slated to feel faster.

The ping system is also getting some adjustments revolving around key player feedback that it can often feel cluttered, especially in intense moments. To that end, enemy soldiers spotted with the Recon Drone will no longer remain marked for squad members. There are also broader refinements planned “focused on improving clarity, reducing visual noise, and strengthening squad readability.”

Battlefield: REDSEC players also have plenty to look forward to, with the map seeing an underground expansion in the next phase of updates. Underneath Fort Lyndon, players will find a new point-of-interest that permanently brings a new arena for players to fight around. To further encourage players to check it out, the location will also have higher-tier loot on a temporary basis. The new area can be found through green smoke marking entrances.

Other adjustments for the battle royale mode include Weapon Caches being changed into lootable containers after Missions are disabled, balance changes for Air Strikes, and an issue where anti-vehicle crates can spawn without any loot. Later in the season, players can expect a new Armor Drop Strike Package, and Ammo Drop supplying more ammo and adding armor plates.

Players who prefer taking on battle royale matches solo can also check out the BR solos option in a new Battlefield Labs section in the live game between March 6th and 9th. Battlefield Studios has said that opening this testing up to all players, “allows us to evaluate the experience at scale with as many players as possible.” Solos mode will have a few core differences from Quads and Duos, like no squad revives or redeploy towers, missions being adjusted for single-player completion, and different scaling for Class Training Path XP.

Producer Phil Girette says the team sees fan feedback and hears it "very loudly," but said, "We'll need some more time."

Before Battlefield 6 launched and sold over seven million copies in three days, and well after that, players have been demanding bigger maps, just like the older titles. It reached a boiling point when Blackwell Fields launched in Season 1 to much hate. Even lead producer David Sirland agreed that larger sandbox-style maps were needed.

Over four months later, where are they? According to producer Phil Girette, they’re still coming, but fans will need to be patient. “We see that feedback, and hear it very loudly,” he told The Gamer. “And we’re really happy that people just, you know, want more of the stuff that we can provide.

“After the extension of Season 1 and after the launch, which went pretty smoothly for Battlefield standards, we decided that Season 2 needs a bit more time. I think the extension was one of the major factors where people now feel like, where is the new stuff? So if we had people playing the new stuff already, hopefully that would be a little bit better.”

Girette noted maps like the returning fan-favorite Golmud Railway from Battlefield 4, and how Season 2 offers “more maps, and bigger maps.” However, he confessed to the sheer time-consuming nature of maps.

“And what we’re doing on top of that, like we see in Season 2, is more maps, and bigger maps. We need to make sure that the maps hit the quality and match the expectations of what the players want. We’re already testing Golmud Railway early on Labs now, so that’s a step in the right direction. And then more maps is, of course, something that we will look more into. But also maps are one of the most time-intensive things that we build. We’ll need some more time.”

You have to wonder if delaying Season 2 by a month to address community feedback also played a part. Nevertheless, the effort seems to have been worth it – not only will future seasons avoid delays, but the current will serve as the foundation for what’s to come.

In the meantime, Season 2 offers Contaminated, a map where players must employ gas masks to survive against the enemy. On March 17th, its second phase, Nightfall, will introduce Hagental Base. The third phase, Hunter/Prey, arrives on April 14th and is intriguing in that it focuses on a limited-time mode called Operation Augur.
"Season 2 is definitely bigger than what we have done in Season 1," said Phil Girette in an interview discussing the new content.

With the recent launch of Battlefield 6‘s Season 2, producer Phil Girette and associate producer Kit Eklof have spoken about the update cycle, addressing the longer end of Season 1, and how the newest bit of content will bring back lapsed players. In an interview with TechRadar, Girette and Eklof spoke about how the extension of Season 1 broke the pace of content for players who were already enjoying the game. However, Season 2 needed more time for polishing.

“So we launched Battlefield 6, and we were super happy to have had a smooth launch for once. And then going into Season 1, I think the key thing there because, […] there were a lot of people spending a lot of time playing it, what kind of broke that pace is the extension we did of Season 1,” Girette said. “We looked at the content that we have in Season 2, and we just said, ‘it needs a little bit more time in the oven to further polish’.”

“Season 2 is definitely bigger than what we have done in Season 1. We have the maps, and we think they’re going to be quite strong. We have the additional gameplay mechanics. We have popular vehicles coming back like the Little Bird. There’s a whole new addition in REDSEC itself as well.”

Eklof spoke about bringing back Battlefield fans with Season 2, noting that “there are so many things that are in the Battlefield DNA that we’re adding to Battlefield 6 here.”

Further in the interview, Girettesaid Season 2 of Battlefield 6 lays the foundation that future updates will build on. Of the two seasons released for the shooter, he also said that “this is going to be the strongest season” so far.

“Does the perfect Battlefield season even exist?” he said. “Everyone sat together and said, ‘This is really, really strong.’ We want to use Season 2 as kind of the foundation going forward – this is the level we need to hit. We hope that the players think the same, but I think this is going to be the strongest season [yet].”

Girette had previously spoken about the reasons behind Season 2’s delay, confirming that keeping the launch of Battlefield 6 smooth meant that future content plans needed to be pushed back to ensure proper polish.

“We came out of the launch from Battlefield 6, and we don’t have the best of track records for launches, but it went pretty smooth this time around, so we’re happy for that one,” explained Girette. “But that launch also takes a lot of work and time. We saw the content we had planned for Season 2, and we wanted just to give that a little bit more time in the oven to polish things and make sure we hit the expectations that players have.”

For future content, Girette also revealed that the delay of Season 2 resulted in Battlefield Studios taking steps across various divisions to ensure new seasons arrive on schedule.

Battlefield 6 and REDSEC are available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Phil Girette said that Season 2 was delayed because the developers needed more time to work after handling the game's launch.

As Battlefield Studios kicks off Season 2 of Battlefield 6, the developers have taken the time to address the delay of the update from its previously planned January release. Speaking to Game Reactor, DICE producer Phil Girette has noted that a similar delay won’t affect future seasonal content releases.

Noting that Battlefield Studios—a collaboration between DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive Studios—worked as a whole to ensure that the launch of Battlefield 6 went smoothly. Once all was said and done, the developers realized that they needed more time to work on the Season 2 content.

As for the future, Girette noted that steps have been taken across various departments, from marketing to development, to make sure that next seasons are released as soon as the preceding season has ended on its planned date.

“Obviously, once you plan out seasons, there are a lot of things that come with that like the marketing work behind it, making sure the timings affect not only the game itself but many, many other things,” he said. “Future seasons as well. Absolutely, we need to make sure those hit as expected, and we have taken quite a lot of different steps in different departments to make sure that the players get the seasons immediately once the season is planned to end.”

The first batch of content for Battlefield 6 Season 2 will kick things off today with the release of the new Contaminated map along with a slate of new weapons and vehicles. There are also limited-time game modes: VL-7 Strike for the regular multiplayer, and Gauntlet Altered State and Synthesis for REDSEC.

March 17th will see the release of the Hagental Base map and a limited-time event dubbed Nightfall. These will be accompanied by a new sidearm, submachine gun, and a new land-based vehicle (the M1030-1 motorcycle). The third month of Season 2 will kick off with the limited-time Operation Augur game mode.

Battlefield Studios had published a community update last week discussing the various changes coming with the update. These include streamlined progression with a reduced emphasis on mode-specific challenges. REDSEC players will also earn more Career XP and Weapon XP during their time, and the update also brings weapon-specific improvements, including recoil compensation and general improvements to weapon handling.

Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Also, take a look at how Battlefield 6 was the best-selling game in the US in 2025.

Dirt bikes, new weapons, a limited-time mode focused on combat in darkness, and Operation Augur are also due in the coming months.

If the intro cinematic for the second season of Battlefield 6 didn’t have you hyped, Battlefield Studios has debuted the first gameplay trailer. It introduces the newest map, Contaminated, which goes live on February 17th amid the usual mix of explosions and mayhem. And if the headline didn’t give it away, you’ll want to pack a gas mask for this.

Psychochemical smoke from Fort Lyndon is active on occasion, resulting in soldiers actively hallucinating (and being ripe for the picking). Gas masks will protect you from the effects, but also limit your field of view, so stay alert. Also going live with Extreme Measures, the first phase of Season 2, are two light helicopters, the AH-6 Little Bird and MH-350, which can venture through tunnels with terrifying ease.

Three new weapons are also on offer – the GRT-CPS DMR, VCR-2 Assault Rifle, and M121 A2 Machine Gun – alongside two new gadgets – the HTI-MK2 and 9K38 IGLA. On March 17th, Hagental Base debuts as a new map alongside the clearly-not-Splinter-Cell-inspired Nightfall event, the M1030-1 dirt bike, and the CZ3A1 submachine gun.

April 14th closes the season with Hunter/Prey, which includes updates to Portal, the LTV, and the limited-time Operation Augur. Strangely, there’s no mention of the returning Golmud Railway from Battlefield 4, but perhaps we’ll learn more in the coming months.

The challenges system is seeing quite a few adjustments, with less reliance on mode-specific challenges and more assists being counted.

As Battlefield Studios gets closer to the planned February 17th release date for Battlefield 6 Season 2, the developers have published a new community update detailing what kinds of changes we will see in the competitive shooter. Among the information revealed is how the progression systems, weapon balance, and player movement will all see improvements, among other things.

On the progression front, Battlefield 6’s challenges will be streamlined, with a reduced emphasis on mode-specific challenges. The daily sidearm challenge will also be removed from the regular rotation, and assists counting towards Daily Challenges will have expanded criteria. The Battle Pass progression will also be sped up through recalculations of Battle Pass Tokens being earned through Career XP. Battlefield: REDSEC players will also see some improvement thanks to an increase in Career XP and Weapon XP earn rates.

Moving on to weapon-specific improvements, recoil compensation is being made “fully consistent”, which in turn will lead to more reliable weapon handling. Automatic weapons have also seen adjustments to ensure that they all feel distinct depending on various combat distances. Player movement will start feeling more predictable and readable thanks to updates to acceleration curves, smoother vaulting and ladder transitions, and fixes to visual inconsistencies and other issues that might arise while traversing during close-quarters combat.

The audio systems across Battlefield 6 and Battlefield: REDSEC will also see upgrades, giving players more clear cues for movements and interactions. Overlapping sounds are also slated to be handled better, which will help players avoid having someone sneak up on them in the thick of battle.

Looking beyond the initial launch of Battlefield 6 Season 2, Battlefield Studios has reiterated the importance of testing through Battlefield Labs. While recent Labs sessions have involved testing the new Contaminated map that will kickstart Season 2, future playtests will focus on time-to-kill tuning. Battlefield Labs has also recently started testing another big map coming to Battlefield 6 in Season 2—Golmud Railway.

“Initial reactions have been positive, particularly around the overall scale and flow of the playspace,” wrote the developers. “Players noted that the map feels familiar while still offering something new, including improvements to the northern town area and added cover that better supports infantry movement and engagements.”

Battlefield: REDSEC players will also see some big changes coming in the form of Vehicle Keycards getting a cooldown. This, noted Battlefield Studios, was to ensure that a single team having multiple tanks rolling around should be a rare occurrence. Despite this, however, Vehicle Keycard rewards will still be available in meaningful ways thanks to the importance of tanks to the gameplay flow of the battle royale mode.

Battlefield 6 will be kicking off its second season soon, and Battlefield Studios recently released an intro cinematic trailer that focuses on the lore behind the new Contaminated map. The cinematic focused on the Pax Armata taking over a Cold War-era base, and NATO getting ready to take it back. Both sides will face some extra trouble thanks to the map being covered by hazardous gas, making gas masks a necessity.

Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Since its October release, the shooter has gone on to become the best-selling game in the US for 2025.

As NATO ventures to recapture a base from the Pax Armata, chaos erupts. A full gameplay reveal is set for February 12th.

After a delay for more polish and to incorporate community feedback, Battlefield 6’s next season is set to go live on February 17th. While February 12th marks the full gameplay reveal, Battlefield Studios has released the intro cinematic and some background on one of the new maps.

Long story short, the Pax Armata has seized a Cold War-era base from NATO, and the latter is going to war to get it back. The map itself looks to be on the larger side, with aerial combat and tanks rolling through the landscape, but the gas masks are the real key. A hazardous smoke is seemingly present throughout the map, necessitating the masks.

We’ll need to wait and see how extensive the mechanic is, but it was tested in Battlefield Labs (and codenamed “Contaminated”) before release. We’ll have to wait until later this week to learn more, but expect to see new weapons, attachments, and other additions.

And that’s only for the first phase of Season 2. Battlefield Studios has confirmed that fan-favorite Battlefield 4 map, Golmud Railway, will return at a later point.

Battlefield 6 is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Despite player count dips post-launch, it was the best-selling game in the United States last year and a huge success for publisher Electronic Arts.
