Alongside the classic NES version of Tetris, its 1998 remaster from the Game Boy Color era is now playable on Nintendo Switch.

If you’re not keen on buying Tetris Forever and only want to experience the original classic, Tetris for the NES is now on Nintendo Switch Online. However, Tetris DX is also available to subscribers.

As a remaster of Tetris, available in 1998 for the Game Boy Color, Tetris DX received acclaim from critics and fans. It adds the classic Marathon mode, where players clear lines for as long as possible and two new modes – Ultra and 40 Lines. The former provides a three-minute time limit and tasks you with earning the most points before it runs out.

The latter only gives you 40 lines to clear with the twist of doing so as quickly as possible. You can also play against the CPU and, best of all, save your high scores to the battery, a novelty at the time.

Check out the release trailer below, with creator Alexey Pajitnov offering his thoughts on the titles and how the fans contributed to their success.

Three classic handheld Mario titles from the Game Boy era will be available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers this Tuesday.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD have release dates for Nintendo Switch, while a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming in April 2026. As for the coming days, Nintendo is adding three Mario titles from the Game Boy era to Nintendo Switch Online on March 12th.

These include Dr. Mario on the Game Boy and Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Color. Dr. Mario launched in 1990 and is a puzzle game akin to Tetris, where players must align different colored pills to destroy viruses. Mario Golf launched in 1999, and unlike its Nintendo 64 cousin, it offers a story mode and role-playing game elements.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, those features would find their way into the Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis. It launched in 2001 and saw the player training at the Royal Tennis Academy, becoming champion and eventually going on to face Mario (though there are separate paths for singles and doubles).

With over 33.34 million units sold in the region as of December 31, the Switch has now officially overtaken the Nintendo DS and Game Boy / Game Boy Color.

Nintendo recently announced that the Switch has sold over 139.36 million units worldwide as of December 31, and alongside that, also provided a breakdown of its sales across different regions. Specifically where Japan is concerned, the hybrid console has hit a major milestone.

As per the company’s recent quarterly fiscal report, the Nintendo Switch has sold 33.34 million units in Japan to date, which means it is now the region’s highest-selling console of all time. It has leapfrogged the Nintendo DS (32.99 million units sold) and the Game Boy / Game Boy Color (32.47 million units sold).

Of course, in terms of worldwide sales, things take a different shape. As mentioned, the Switch has sold 139.36 million units worldwide, which puts it third in the all-time rankings, behind the PlayStation 2, which has sold over 155 million units, and the Nintendo DS, which has sold over 154 million units.

Leaks have claimed that Nintendo’s next console is set to launch in the second half of this year, but if the Switch continues to sell past its successor’s launch – even if it does so at a diminished rate – it has a good chance of climbing further still in the worldwide all-time rankings.

Four classic titles from the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Color are playable on Nintendo Switch for base subscribers today.

Nintendo has announced four new titles added to its Nintendo Switch Online catalogue of classic games. All four titles are available for base subscribers. Check out the trailer below to see them all in action.

On the Super NES side is Kirby’s Star Stacker, a puzzle game that’s a Super Famicom remake of the 1997 Game Boy version. You also get Downtown Nekketsu March: Super-Awesome Field Day!, and Joy Mech Fight from the NES era. The lone Game Boy Color title is Quest for Camelot and is the only title in this line-up to have been localized into English before now.

Nintendo Switch Online is available for $19.99 yearly, while Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack costs $49.99. While the former provides access to NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, the latter includes all those in addition to Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis classics. Stay tuned for other new additions to the service in the coming months.

A new Eurogamer report corroborates earlier leaks, and claims that even more retro consoles' libraries could be added to the service down the line.

A recent leak from multiple sources claimed that Nintendo was gearing up to add a select number of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to the Nintendo Switch Online library for the service’s subscribers, and with this newest development, it seems likelier that that could end up happening very soon.

Following in the footsteps of that recent report, Eurogamer has corroborated that information (which was originally shared by known insider NateDrake and then corroborated by Nintendo Life), saying that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are indeed headed to Nintendo Switch Online. Eurogamer also mentions that other retro consoles are also on the cards for similar treatment, though doesn’t elaborate on what that could end up meaning.

When Nintendo might announce this expansion of the service (if it is accurate, of course) remains to be seen. Recent rumours have suggested that another Nintendo Direct is planned for some time this month, so maybe we’ll hear more about it something then. Either way, we’ll keep you updated on any new info that comes our way, so stay tuned.

A new rumour claims that the Nintendo Switch's online subscription service will soon be adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

Though it’s been around for a while, Nintendo Switch Online hasn’t done an excellent job of making a great case for value for money. Though subscriber numbers have been going up steadily, even with free games such as Tetris 99 and the like and access to select NES and SNES games, there are many who feel Nintendo needs to add more content to the service to make it worth the price of entry.

According to a new rumour, that could happen soon. Known insider NateDrake recently uploaded a podcast episode in which he, alongside co-host MVG, said that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games could soon be added to the Nintendo Switch Online library. The origin of this rumour is a datamine of the Switch’s NES files from a couple of years ago, which revealed multiple emulators in the app, one of which is believed to be for the Game Boy.

Additionally, Nintendo Life also states that according to their sources, Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles will be added to the service’s catalog “really soon.” There’s no word on whether Game Boy Advance games are also going to be added, but right now, it’s looking unlikely.

This is, of course, still unconfirmed, so take it with a grain of salt. That said, what with Nintendo looking to increase Nintendo Switch Online’s appeal, a move like this would make a lot of sense, and please a lot of people. We’ll let you know should we learn anything else, so stay tuned.

This was much harder than you might think.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that without Nintendo, the games industry as we know it simply would not exist. The Big N has been responsible for pioneering and popularizing a multitude of things that we take for granted in video games across both hardware and software. And though they have, like any other company, been through some rough times, looking back on their track record, there’s way more stuff to be impressed by than there is to be lukewarm on.

Given their massive pedigree and their enduring quality, ranking every single major gaming platform that they have ever produced seems like an insane task- but we’re nothing if not a little bit insane, so that’s what we’ll be doing here. Join us (or prepare to skewer us on your pitchforks) as we rank every single Nintendo handheld and home console from worst to best.

#13. VIRTUAL BOY

While ranking pretty much every other system Nintendo has made was far from easy, there was never any doubt in our minds that the Virtual Boy belongs at the very bottom of this list. There’s some reserved praise to be given here for its outside-the-box ideas and its usage of stereoscopic 3D back when games hardly even did polygonal 3D- but beyond that, the Virtual Boy has few redeeming qualities. Over the course of its life (and it was a very short life), the system got less than two dozen games in total- a shockingly low number, and not one of them was worth writing home about. The asinine design of the hardware only drives home the fact that the Virtual Boy is best left to the recesses of our memories.
