The spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic has just recruited a fairly seasoned and talented studio art director.

Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic made a splash at last year’s Game Awards, but there’s been barely a ripple amid the stars since that reveal.

Well, that has now changed with Pascal Blanché joining its team as the studio art director. He is best known for his work on games like Assassin’s Creed (2008), Far Cry: New Dawn, and Splinter Cell: Conviction, aside from indies like Hooked On You under his belt.

He broke the news himself, via a post on Bluesky, with the following statement: “Super excited to announce that I started a new position as Studio Art Director at ArcanautStudios, where I joined forces with Casey Hudson and his amazing team to work on the next epic Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic!”

With Hudson, who is the director of the upcoming title, stating that it was going to be a “love letter” to the title that inspired it, it’s going to be interesting to see what touches Blanché creates for what’s shaping up to be a fresh new take on a galaxy far, far away.

Although Fate of the Old Republic doesn’t have a release date yet, things are certainly looking like the game is in good hands. Now, all we can do is wait to find out who’s featured in the image that Blanché shared along with his post, which you can check out below.

"Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!" says the director regarding the title's potentially long development cycle.

The excitement for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was replaced by curiosity over what’s to be its “spiritual successor” – namely, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Developed by the recently established Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games, it’s led by Casey Hudson of the Mass Effect trilogy. He’s also the director of 2003’s Knights of the Old Republic.

Of course, because of the studio’s recent establishment, there are those, like Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who believe it wouldn’t launch until 2030 (if not later). Hudson responded on Twitter afterwards, telling fans, “Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030’ rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”

Which is all well and good, but that doesn’t mean it’s launching next year or even in 2027. Then again, considering how far away the KOTOR remake seems to be (don’t even get us started on the sequel’s alleged remake), it’s better than nothing.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic doesn’t have any platforms, but it’s confirmed to be a single-player narrative action RPG. Players venture through a “galaxy on the edge of rebirth” as a Force user, and, like the original, your choices will have an impact.

Fate of the Old Republic will not be a sequel to the seminal Knights of the Old Republic according to the VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games.

While the recently-unveiled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic might have a few similarities with seminal RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, especially with its title including being made by the studio where the director of the latter serves as CEO, the game won’t be a sequel. In an interview with the official Star Wars website, Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly has said that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will instead be more of a love letter to the classic game.

Drawing on his time having worked on several games adapting the Star Wars universe, including MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, Reilly notes that this new game is “about honoring that legacy by creating something in the same tradition of a deep, cinematic, choice-driven role-playing game.” He also noted that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is being built by people who helped shape that legacy.”

Studio CEO and Knights of the Old Republic director Casey Hudson also spoke about his experience in working on a game in the Star Wars setting after such a long time, since the RPG first came out all the way back in 2003. As for why it took so long to get a new major Star Wars RPG going, Hudson noted that “a project like this is a huge commitment for everyone involved, so it took the right conditions to get everything to line up.”

As for why Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic won’t be a direct sequel to the classic BioWare RPG, it is worth noting that the current incarnation of the Star Wars setting essentially jettisoned all of the previously established lore that wasn’t already covered in the movies. Since then, IP owner Disney has focused on creating its own background lore for Star Wars with a slate of movies, TV shows, books and comics. Owing to this, while Knights of the Old Republic might no longer be canon for the current Star Wars setting, Fate of the Old Republic will likely tap into some of the newer lore that has been established since then.

“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to create a definitive Star Wars experience — crafting an adventure that consisted of all the things we dreamed of doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our aspirations are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

As for how Hudson’s studio—Arcanaut Studios—ended up being the developer for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, Hudson noted that he had maintained contact with Lucasfilm over the 20-plus years since the release of Knights of the Old Republic. This essentially meant that, when it was time to discuss a new project, conversations between the studio and the company went well.

“Our goal is developing the kind of games I love making: emotionally powerful, cinematic adventures driven by player agency, narrative depth, and immersive world-building,” said Hudson about Arcanaut Studios. “Conversations between our team and Lucasfilm Games led to an incredible opportunity to return to Star Wars, and once again we can hardly believe we’re working on such a special project.”

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced during The Game Awards 2025 with a teaser trailer. The title doesn’t yet have a release date, however.

As a "spiritual successor" to the first Knights of the Old Republic, the single-player role-playing game offers a galaxy-spanning adventure.

Rumors ran rampant about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake receiving a new trailer, but as it turns out, it was for a brand-new title. Directed by Casey Hudson, who worked on the original Mass Effect Trilogy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player role-playing game set during the days of The Old Republic.

There wasn’t much information revealed aside from a CG trailer showcasing a female protagonist, two companions, and a strange new threat. Of course, you’ll have your trusty lightsaber to help out.

Development is headlined by Arcanaut Studios with Lucasfilm Games, with the title described as a “spiritual successor” to the first Knights of the Old Republic. The development team consists of numerous veterans, and as you’ll traipse through the galaxy, there will be hard-hitting decisions to make (and an alliance to either the Light or Darkness).

There’s no release date or platforms announced, so stay tuned for more updates on Fate of the Old Republic.

As of March 2025, the remake "is/was in development" and will feature content cut from Obsidian Entertainment's original release.

As fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic gear up for a potential re-reveal of the long-awaited remake, it seems the sequel is getting the remake treatment as well. GameFile’s Stephen Totilo recently investigated numerous filings, documents and a deposition with Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly regarding the removal of the “Restored Content DLC” in KOTOR 2’s Switch port.

Throughout this, he discovered mentions of Project Juliet, which is a “full, modern remake of Knights of the Old Republic 2” that “is/was in development” as of March 2025. Reilly described it as offering “modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and the general—the general content of KOTOR 2, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all those kinds of things.”

The project was discussed with Aspyr, but its current status is unknown. In a follow-up post on Bluesky, Totilo said this remake would also include Obsidian’s cut content, aka the “Restored Content DLC.” Whether it’s undergone any changes remains to be seen. With how up in the air Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is, it’s surprising that the sequel is getting a remake at all.

Perhaps the former is further along than we initially imagined and could be gearing up for a release next year. It was first announced for PS5 and PC back in 2021, and concept art of Kashykkk and early levels has since leaked. Stay tuned for further updates from The Game Awards on December 11th.

Prominent leakers suggest follow-ups to the recently-released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have been greenlit.

Xbox has ended the year strong with the launch of the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and amidst all the widespread acclaim for the MachineGames-developed first-person action-adventure title, it seems like there might be yet more Indy on the horizon.

That’s as per prominent leaker Daniel Richtman and Windows Central journalist Jez Corden, with the former taking to Twitter and writing, “Looks like we’re getting more Indy games”, and the latter responding with a gif saying, “It’s true.”

Whether that means Microsoft, Bethesda, and MachineGames are moving forward with sequels to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle or if it’s other Indiana Jones projects that have entered production at some other studio is unclear, but in either case, Lucasfilm Games clearly wants to keep investing in the IP, at least in the video gaming space. Earlier this month, Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly also spoke about the possibility of more games based on the IP.
The developer reveals, "We are still hard at work, and our game was unaffected by last week's news." It will revealed "As soon as it's ready."

Electronic Arts was the latest publisher to join the industry in laying off a portion of its workforce. It also announced the closure of Ridgeline Games, with Criterion now working on future Battlefield campaigns, and cancelled Respawn’s Star Wars FPS (rumored to feature a playable Mandalorian).

There haven’t been any announcements or news regarding Bit Reactor, led by XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM 2 art director Greg Foerscth and working on a new Star Wars strategy game. In a new tweet, the developer said, “Last week was difficult for the industry, and more so because of our strong relationships within the other teams at Respawn.

“But for those asking, we are still hard at work, and our game was unaffected by last week’s news.” When asked when fans could get their first look at the game, it responded, “As soon as it’s ready…”

Details on the new title are still pending, so stay tuned for further updates. As for future Star Wars titles, the next Star Wars Jedi title is in the works, though director Stig Asmussen left the studio last year. During Ocala Comic Con in September 2023, actor Cameron Monaghan (who plays Cal Kestis) said the project is a “big undertaking”, but hopefully, when all is said and done, “We’ll be able to go in and make something really cool.”

The title could be the same first-person shooter directed by Peter Hirschmann, who worked on the classic Star Wars Battlefront series.

It’s been a while since Respawn Entertainment provided an update on its upcoming Star Wars projects following the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. According to Insider-Gaming’s Tom Henderson, the studio is seemingly cooking a “Star Wars single-player experience I think a lot of people have wanted for a long time.”

Henderson will have a report with more information (though it may take a while), but it isn’t Star Wars Battlefront 3. It could be the first-person shooter helmed by Peter Hirschmann, who worked as executive producer on the original Star Wars Battlefront series. He stated that the title would be a “new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy” and feature “a story I have always wanted to tell.”

While everyone may assume The Mandalorian, it could even be a Boba Fett title, which Visceral Games’ Star Wars 1313 was reportedly supposed to be before its cancellation. Job listings from last year indicated it’s taking inspiration from Star Wars: Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, so it may be a sequel to those titles.

As for other Star Wars titles, Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars Outlaws is coming this fiscal year, while Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is reportedly in the works at Saber Interactive. Respawn is also working to bring Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to Xbox One and PS4, while Bit Reactor is developing a strategy game with XCOM 2 art director Greg Foerscth at the helm.

The remake has reportedly faced development issues, with Saber Interactive allegedly taking over from Aspyr Media last year.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake appeared to be one of the bigger exclusives for PS5 when it was announced in 2021. However, rumors emerged of it being indefinitely on hold and Saber Interactive taking over development over Aspyr Media. It now seems that things could be more dire than initially thought, with the announcement trailer going private on YouTube.

PlayStation also deleted its announcement tweet from September 2021, but you can check out a cached version here. Lucasfilm Games’ tweet is still available with a link to the privated trailer, but it’s not looking good. At best, the project is being rebooted and readied for a re-announcement.

At worst, it could be cancelled. Embracer Group, which owns Saber Interactive and Aspyr Media, has undergone a restructuring lately, closing studios like Volition and reportedly planning to sell Gearbox Entertainment. It wouldn’t be too strange to shutter an expensive project like the remake, but we’ll need to wait for more details. Stay tuned in the meantime.

When asked about the state of the project following reports of development issues, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors refused to comment on the situation.

BioWare’s 2003 RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still widely considered among the greatest games of its era, so when a ground-up remake of the title was announced in 2021, there was naturally no shortage of excitement around it. Last year, however, reports claimed that the remake’s development had been put on hold with developer Aspyr Media being taken off the project, with later reports stating that parent company Embracer Group had instead put Saber Interactive in charge of development.

Official communication on the project and its development, however, has been close to nonexistent for some time now- and it doesn’t seem like that’ll be changing anytime soon. As reported by Axios’ Stephen Totilo on Twitter, when asked in a recent Q&A with investors about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake and the state of its development, Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors refused to provide a comment, saying, “[My] favorite question. I have no further comments.”

Meanwhile, in Embracer Group’s recently published fiscal report, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is still listed among titles that are officially confirmed to be in development right now, as of May 24, 2023.

Upon its announcement, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake was confirmed to be a PS5 and PC title, though a release date wasn’t provided.
