The game's creative director revealed that the story will involve the world not being fully aware of mutants, and being scared of them.

While the recent trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine included an appearance by Jean Grey, creative director Marcus Smith has revealed that the X-Men don’t exist in the game as a group. In an interview with Eurogamer, Smith spoke about the story of Marvel’s Wolverine and how the studio wanted to focus on Logan as the main character.

To take advantage of this focus, the story essentially revolves around the fact that mutants are still quite obscure for the world at large. This also means that mutants will face plenty of discrimination, especially at the hands of people who don’t know about them and want them to not exist.

“The important thing, I guess, is the X-Men don’t exist in our game,” he said. “We wanted to focus on a Wolverine storyline and really build it from that character and build a world that is in a state where mutants aren’t well known. They are known; they’re falling victim to people who do know about them and want to destroy them.”

Despite X-Men not showing up as a group in the story, Marvel’s Wolverine will still feature plenty of cameos from superheroes that have typically worked with, or against, Logan. This includes Jean Grey and Sabretooth, both of whom will feature to some extent in Marvel’s Wolverine.

“So, at the very beginning of the game, Logan actually belongs on a team called Team X, and he has teamed up with Sabretooth, who you see in the gameplay trailer,” said Smith. “But there are no X-Men. There will be a lot of Marvel characters that come into the storyline; so, we’ve already shown Mystique in the earlier trailer, we’ve shown Sabretooth, Jean Grey in this one, and players can expect to have a lot more throughout the game.”

Smith also went on to confirm that Marvel’s Wolverine takes place in the same universe at Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, the studio didn’t want to divert attention away from Logan. As such, any appearance by Spider-Man “will be some Easter-eggy sort of overlap,” Smith explained, “but there is no crossover between Spider-Man and Wolverine.”

On the gameplay side of things, director Mike Daily explained that Jean Grey has been designed to be an “important supplement” to Logan’s own abilities when the two have to team up together to manage enemies. Even outside of combat, Grey can help Logan out when he’s simply sneaking around, thanks to her telepathic powers.

“Even outside of these moments, though, she’s a capable combatant who can defend herself and take out enemies independently on the battlefield,” said Daly, “and as you go through the course of the game, Logan and Jean will team up more times. In stealth, in particular, you’ll be able to take advantage of some coordination between the two of you, using her telepathy to influence enemies.”

Sabretooth, on the other hand, has what has been described by Daly as “a little bit of a contentious relationship” with Logan. In gameplay, this relationship can be seen through the banter between the two characters.

“It’s fun to see them playing off of each other,” he said. “It’s almost a competitive spirit. Jean might use her telekinesis to open up an enemy to help you take them down [but] when you’re fighting with Sabretooth, it’s more like you thought you got the kill and he snatches it right out of your hands just to deny you the pleasure. It’s a different dynamic.”

Marvel’s Wolverine is being developed exclusively for the PS5, and is slated for release on September 15th.
Game director Mike Daly spoke about how the studio didn't want to create an open-world sandbox-styled game in Marvel's Wolverine.

Game director Mike Daly. While Insomniac Games’ recent showcase of the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine may have indicated that it might be a more linear title than the studio’s previous superhero outings, game director Mike Daly has revealed some more details about the game’s pacing and structure. In an interview with IGN, he compared the title’s pacing quite directly with what we typically get from comic books.

The reason behind this largely comes down to the studio asking itself what would make for the best Wolverine game possible that also happens to appropriately represent the character of Logan.

“We thought about, Logan’s a character who basically travels the world, has travelled the world many times over,” Daly said. “He’s pulled by a search for his past. He’s pushed by a sense of duty. And to that end, we decided that a globe-hopping adventure was the right take for this game. Logan is not a character that’s anchored in a particular place and spends a lot of time on it.”

“So what you can expect out of the game is that we’ve created a comic book-style pacing, dense story, that’s like a rollercoaster, and it grips you from beginning to end. And generally speaking, you’re driven through all of these missions by important events and plot points that are happening.”

This also means that the gameplay showcase during Sony’s recent State of Play is “kind of representative” of the whole game. Throughout Marvel’s Wolverine, players will find themselves exploring new regions, since Logan is often pulled to entirely different parts of the world. Daly has also confirmed that stealth will be completely optional, and that the game will be more than happy to let players constantly jump into combat encounters.

“So in that sense, what you saw in the gameplay trailer was kind of representative,” he explained. “Logan’s got a lead, he’s got a direction, but he has agency in how he decides to approach it. The areas have different paths you could take. Stealth is optional; you could do it or you could not do it, you could jump straight into combat. And you can poke your nose around the nooks and crannies of the world to find things here and there, and some optional content and collectibles along the way.”

“We sought to have a large amount of variety in the feel of the different environments that you go to. And so that changes the pacing and the shape of how you navigate space and how you explore. And that leads to different flavors of gameplay as well, where some are more about observation and traversal, some are more about finding characters to interact with, and a lot of them are about stalking enemies and taking them out.”

When asked about whether there will be many sandbox-styled areas in Marvel’s Wolverine, Daly confirmed that the studio had never set out to make an open world or sandbox-styled game to begin with. “What we really wanted was a high-octane, high-intrigue, linear single-player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure,” he said.

Marvel’s Wolverine is coming to PS5 on September 15th. For more details, check out the fact that the title allows players to turn off the gore, and how the relationship between Logan and Sabertooth will play out.

The new extended demo showcases the utter brutality of Wolverine's methods and a race against time to save some mutants.

Insomniac Games finally gave us a closer look at Marvel’s Wolverine, following the iconic anti-hero on a mission to save some captured mutants from the Reavers. Check it out below, with pre-orders going live after State of Play.

From delivering death from above and brutally murdering his enemies, the developer is pulling absolutely no punches when it comes to gore (especially when Logan takes damage). There’s a fair bit of what looks to be parrying, and some stylish executions along with the much-welcome Berserker Rage. Even Jean Grey joins the fray, using her telepathic powers to assist.

Visually, the title looks absolutely incredible with detailed fabric, real-time reflections, and more. It’s not long before the Reavers leave with the mutants, leading to some pitched battles on moving vehicles and a powerful brute going blow for blow with Logan. This also provides a nice look at his ability to focus and quickly regenerate wounds from a fatal blow.

Much like its takes on Spider-Man, Insomniac’s Wolverine is an original story which takes inspiration from the comics. It follows James “Logan” Howlett on a quest to regain his memories, potentially explaining the adamantium in his body and the claws that pop out when some slicing and dicing is needed.

This takes him to several notable locations from Canada and Tokyo to Madripoor while confronting the Reavers and villains like Omega Red and Sabertooth. Of course, there’s also Mystique, seemingly with her own agenda. Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15th for PS5 as an exclusive after Sony reportedly decided to stop releasing its first-party narrative titles on PC.

Insomniac Games took to social media to once more confirm that it will reveal more details about Marvel's Wolverine in Spring 2026.

Insomniac Games has been quietly working on its next release, Marvel’s Wolverine, and the studio has previously reaffirmed its Fall 2026 release window. With that in mind, the idea that we might get a new trailer for the game at the upcoming State of Play showcase sounded quite obvious. However, the studio has taken to social media to say that it will only be revealing more details in Spring.

While this is far from an outright denial that Marvel’s Wolverine will be present in some form at the State of Play this week, the studio will likely simply make an announcement of what kinds of details we can expect to see when the time actually comes. The studio might also once more show off the gameplay trailer it had already released back in September.

Marvel’s Wolverine is going to be a major first-party game for Sony, and the company’s CFO Lin Tao even went as far as to call it its first major tentpole release for 2026. The statement was made during an investor call, where she was asked if Insomniac’s title would see any impact from Grand Theft Auto 6‘s November 19th release date. In response, Tao said that Marvel’s Wolverine will serve as a major anchor for Sony.

A report from last month, however, has indicated that Insomniac Games is looking at a September or October release date for Marvel’s Wolverine. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, this is so that sales of the game can be maximized before the eventual release of GTA 6. While the latter is expected to sell well across all platforms, it is also likely to be more popular on PS5 than Xbox Series X/S.

“Wolverine is almost certainly going to come out in September or October,” said Schreier. “Xbox is almost a non-factor; I’m sure they’ll sell millions on Xbox, but PlayStation is the main platform, so it’s almost… in some ways it’s kind of like a PlayStation exclusive, that most of the sales will be on PlayStation and it will sell a lot of PlayStation 5s alongside it. So I suspect that Sony is planning its entire calendar around GTA and will not release anything within the blast zone.”

The gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine has been our only major look at the upcoming action game so far. The trailer showcased just how brutal Logan will be in the game, with players being able to dismember their enemies thanks to Wolverine’s fast attacks and blades. Among the enemies we got to see as part of this trailer were familiar foes like Sentinels. The story is also expected to be impacted by major X-Men characters like Mystique and Omega Red. The game will take players on a worldwide journey to locations like Japan, Canada, and Madripoor.

Marvel’s Wolverine is slated for release as a PS5-exclusive. However, it is worth noting that Insomniac’s titles have typically also been ported over to PC eventually. We last saw this with Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. For more details, check out our review of the PC release of the latest entry.

A recent report indicates that the Venom game will feature Eddie Brock as the protagonist with Carnage being the main villain.

Developer Insomniac Games has been quite silent when it comes to talking about its upcoming project, with recent reports indicating that we will finally get to see Marvel’s Wolverine some time this month. A new report indicates that the studio is also working on a spin-off to its Marvel’s Spider-Man games – dubbed Marvel’s Venom. Along with this the report, courtesy of Mp1st, also indicates that the studio might be aiming for a 2026 launch for Marvel’s Wolverine.

Citing its own sources, the report by Mp1st also includes a few extra details about the Venom project, including the fact that we will see Eddie Brock taking on the role of the protagonist in the spin-off. Along with having historical ties to the Symbiote plot from the original Spider-Man comics, Brock taking on the role would also tie in quite nicely with the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Along with Brock being the protagonist, the spin-off title will also see Cletus Kasady as Carnage, who is expected to serve as the primary antagonist in Marvel’s Venom. Anti-Venom is also expected to make an appearance in the title. Interestingly, according to the report, Insomniac Games had originally planned to release Marvel’s Venom some time this year.

The report also indicates that Insomniac Games is working on bringing in Spider-Man 2099 – Miguel O’Hara – into one of the games it is currently working on. Whether the character will show up in one of the two projects being worked on – Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Venom – or if the character is planned for yet another title that hasn’t yet been officially announced is currently unknown.

The last time we heard about Marvel’s Venom was all the way back in December 2023, back when it was first reported that the studio was targeting a 2025 launch for the spin-off. At the time, Insomniac Games was also believed to have started work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. Even the reports at the time noted that the spin-off would feature Carnage as the main villain of the story.

As for Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games is expected to finally showcase the title later this month, likely during Tokyo Games Show 2025. A recent report indicated that playtesters have been having a good time with early builds of the title and finding it impressive. This report comes courtesy of Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson.

“So, it is done. It obviously was delayed to quite a big extent,” said Henderson. “From what I’ve managed to hear, from people working on the project, obviously, the ransomware attack and all the game leaking is one thing, but then the emotional strain that it places on people when you have all of your information leaked, like your address, social security numbers, and all that kind of stuff, is massive.”

“So that obviously delayed the game as well. But from a few playtesters I’ve been speaking to, they think the game looks fantastic. So that’s good news, and fingers crossed we get to see a release date in a couple of weeks’ time.”

Insomniac Games has continued its trend of being silent about its titles that are still in development, wanting to be "stoic" about revealing details.

With the recent news that Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price would be retiring, the company spoke to Variety about its upcoming game, Wolverine, saying that while the studio would love to talk about the game, fans will have to wait until “it’s time” to reveal details.

“We’ve announced Wolverine, and we’d love to talk more about Wolverine, but we have to be like Logan today, and remain very stoic until it’s time to pop the claws down the road,” said co-studio head at Insomniac Chad Dezern to Variety. “As much as we’re as much as we have pent up excitement, we got to hold on to it. So that’s, that’s about as much as we could say about our upcoming projects today.”

This latest statement tracks with what the studio said the last time it was asked about its upcoming Wolverine game. Back in May 2024, when asked about news about Wolverine on social media platform X, the studio responded by saying, “We’ll share news when the time is right, and the right time isn’t now.”

When it comes to the Wolverine game in general, Insomniac has been incredibly quiet since its original announcement of the game back in 2021. What we do know about the title is that it will take place in the same universe as that of the Marvel’s Spider-Man games (also developed by Insomniac), and that it will be a completely standalone game with its own story.

Despite its lack of any announced details, the studio has still been working on Wolverine, as it had revealed back in June 2024 in response to fans asking for a potential PS4/PS5 release of the studio’s open-world parkour-based shooter Sunset Overdrive.

“We’re busy with Marvel’s Wolverine!” said Insomniac in response.

While the studio itself has been quiet about the game, it was hacked by a ransomware group back in 2023 that managed to get its hands on more than 1.3 million internal files of the studio, which included details ranging from employees’ personal information, as well as details about Wolverine. All in all, the hacked data amounted to around 1.67 TB.

Among the things revealed from the hack were that Insomniac seemed to be targeting a release window of 2026 for Wolverine, and that the title would eventually be followed up by a game based on the X-Men, likely tying in somehow with the story in Wolverine. The leaked data also hinted at other projects at the works, including a small-scale Ratchet and Clank title for 2029, as well as a standalone game based on Venom, dubbed Marvel’s Venom.

Other leaks have indicated that the rumoured X-Men game would be slated for release in 2030, with a sequel planned for 2033. There are also indications that the series might overall involve four titles.

Insomniac Games announced the departure of its CEO Ted Price earlier today. Price had worked with the company for more than 30 years, and his role in leadership of the company has now been taken up by Ryan Schneider, Jen Huang, and Chad Dezern.

Leaked Insomniac documents also reveal projected budgets of $305 million and $385 million for Marvel's Wolverine and Marvel's Spider-Man 3 respectively.

Insomniac Games has suffered a large-scale leak following a recent ransomware attack, and alongside plans for multiple major upcoming titles planned for the next several years, the leak also includes details on the development budgets and sales figures for a number of titles, both released and upcoming.

The leak, which was shared on Reddit, reveals that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had a total budget of $315 million (which is par for the course for modern AAA productions), and is projected to sell 10.5 million units, amounting to a 35% return on investment and total profits of $75 million. Given that the game had already sold over 5 million units as of last month, those might seem like conservative projections.

The leak also reveals that Insomniac is projecting Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 – which is seemingly targeting a 2028 release – to sell 14.5 million units, which will amount to a 75% return on investment and profits of $170 million against a total budget of $385 million. Meanwhile, Insomniac is also expecting Marvel’s Wolverine to have a budget of $305 million and sell 10 million units, which means an $85 million profit and a 40% return on investment.

Details on the sales figures and budgets for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales have also emerged.

Meanwhile, Insomniac’s ransomware leak has also leaked multiple planned unannounced games, including an X-Men series that will begin with the Wolverine game, a new Ratchet and Clank instalment, and a new IP.
