The critically acclaimed platformer is heading to Google's game streaming service.

Matt Makes Games’ award-winning platformer Celeste is coming to Google Stadia. A new trailer has announced the same, though there’s no release date for it yet. Considering the relative paucity of platformers on Stadia, Celeste is an excellent addition to the line-up. See it in action below.

Unlike TowerFall, the developer’s previous release which focused more on multiplayer, Celeste is a single-player affair. It sees Madeline venturing to Celeste Mountain to try and reach the top. There’s a lot going on in her life and the mountain manifests her inner fears en route to the summit. Along the way, she’ll encounter other characters, from the photographer Theo to the ghostly hotel owner Mr. Oshiro.

Renowned for its art-style, difficulty and brilliant gameplay, Celeste sold 500,000 copies in 2018. It’s currently available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can check out our review for it here. After launch, the development team added a chunky free DLC chapter called “Farewell” which contains over 100 levels and more story content.

Pick up one of the best platformers ever before 9 AM PST today.

Matt Makes Games’ Celeste is the newest free game on the Epic Games Store as part of the “12 Days of Free Games” initiative. It’s only free until later today at 9 AM PST so hurry up and claim your free copy. Note that you’ll need an Epic Games Store account to claim it.

Having released in 2018, Celeste is one of the best platformers out there and a top tier title in its own right. It tells the story of Madeline who travels to Celeste Mountain to reach the peak. What she doesn’t expect is to encounter strange entities, brutal puzzles and her alter ego, Badeline, who represents her negativity.

Celeste is critically acclaimed for its story and art-style along with narrative. You can read our review here for more information. It recently received free DLC in the form of Chapter 9: Farewell. Check back on the store tomorrow – judging by the tease, it seems that Kingdom may be the next free title.

More than 100 new levels with tons of new challenges and music await.

Matt Makes Games’ Celeste has finally received its free DLC Chapter 9: Farewell. Taking place after the main story, it introduces 100 new levels with tons of devious new challenges, a new story and 40 minutes of new tunes. The update should be available on all platforms so check your downloads now.

If you don’t see Chapter 9, then you’ll need to complete Chapter 8: The Core. This is easier said than done since you need to collect Crystal Hearts from the B-Side levels and then complete The Core. Assist Mode is a thing in Celeste so don’t be afraid to use it if you really, really want to play Chapter 9.

Celeste is also currently on sale for Nintendo Switch via the eShop and Steam so now is as good a time as any to hop in. It’s also available for Xbox One and PS4. Though Celeste isn’t currently planned to have a sequel, director Matt Thorson and his team have formed Extremely OK Games to work on a new mystery project.

Director Matt Thorson says the team is interested in "making something new."

Matt Makes Games’ Celeste will be receiving its long-awaited Chapter 9: Farewell DLC today. It’s a free update which adds over 100 new levels and an entirely new story that takes place after the base game. Now that the update is more or less done, are there any plans for a sequel in the future?

Speaking to IGN via email, director/designer Matt Thorson said that the team isn’t really looking to make a sequel right now. “Maybe in the future we’ll change our minds, but right now we don’t know how we’d do a sequel justice. And besides, we’re way more interested in making something new for our next full release.”

Thorson noted that the game is close to hitting one million units sold since releasing in January 2018. The success has “really given us space to create on our own terms for the near future” like releasing Chapter 9 for free. Otherwise, it’s “crazy” think that such a thing should be happening.

As Thorson explains, “First of all, we really should be charging for it” and he added that they “don’t like setting expectations that expansions of this size should be free.” He then stated that, “We want to be clear to our audience that we’re only able to release this for free because we’re in a very fortunate position right now, and that this really isn’t a reasonable thing to expect from any developer, including us, in the future.”

So essentially, don’t expect major expansion-like content from the team to be free in the future. Why is Chapter 9 free at all? Thorson noted that charging players would “force us to approach it as a new ‘product’, which would constrain us in some ways that didn’t feel right.” Still, even if Celeste isn’t seeing tons of free updates like many other games today, it’s good to see such substantial content added at this stage.

Celeste is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. What’s next for Thorson and Extremely OK Games? The developer’s next game is “not ready to be revealed yet so for now we want to ask everyone to be patient” but we can’t wait to see what they have in store. Stay tuned in the meantime for more information on Celeste Chapter 9: Farewell.

Two very different platformers are free now on the storefront.

As controversial as the Epic Games Store tends to be, one thing that I would think almost anyone would be okay with is the steady amount of free games the storefront gives out (although I’m sure there’s those who have some issue with that in some way). This week we have two platformers that take two very different approaches to the genre.

Both games are critically acclaimed, with Celeste being a mixture of hardcore old school platforming alongside a deep dive into the mental state of depression. Inside is Playdead’s spiritual follow up to Limbo and is an almost dreamlike surreal game, open to interpretation as you go through a nightmarish grouping of levels. They are an interesting compliment to each other since they tackle the genre in very different ways.

Both are free now starting today and running through September 5th. Next week’s titles will run from September 5th-12th, with ABZU and The End is Nigh next in the queue.

The critically acclaimed platformers are available from August 29th to September 5th on the store.

Polytron Corporation’s indie platforming adventure Fez is the latest free title on the Epic Games Store. If you have the Epic Games Launcher, you can add it to your library and keep it forever. The offer is valid until August 29th.

Next week will see the return of two free games on the Epic Games Store and they’re quite the selection. Matt Makes Games’ Celeste and Playdead’s Inside will be available from August 29th to September 5th. Both games are critically acclaimed platformers, the former focusing on difficult timing-based challenges while the latter is more atmospheric puzzle-solving.

Celeste will especially be worth checking out since it has some free DLC coming out. Dubbed “Chapter 9”, it sports new songs and over 100 new levels along with its own storyline. There’s no release window yet but hopefully we’ll here more before the year is out. Stay tuned for more information in the meantime.

Director Matt Thorson isn't talking about release dates until "we're 100 percent sure."

Matt Makes Games has been working hard on the upcoming free DLC for Celeste. Chapter 9 has been teased for several months now, and writer/director Matt Thorson has been revealing bits of information. Recently, however, he confirmed that the DLC chapter will have over 100 levels.

That’s a ton of content, and it wasn’t even expected to have a story from the outset either, which it does now. Thorson revealed in some recent tweets that the levels have been detailed for “weeks now”, but the team wasn’t committing to any release date. “We don’t like to talk release dates until we’re 100% sure, because as always we have missed every internal target we set for ourselves as the Chapter grew in scope. Sorry!”

Chapter 9 will be one continuous chapter featuring new items and mechanics. There won’t be any strawberries to collect, but you can expect these levels to be very tough. Given how enjoyable Celeste was (read our review here), we can’t wait to see what the development team has come up with this time. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Celeste is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

"We originally weren't planning to do any story," says director Matt Thorson.

Matt Makes Games’ Celeste released in January 2018 and was a venerable hit, selling over 500,000 copies that year and amassing tons of acclaim. A free DLC chapter is in the works as well, and will contain new items and mechanics. It will also have a story, something which the development team wasn’t originally planning to do.

In a recent tweet, director Matt Thorson said, “We’re finishing up the script for #Celeste Chapter 9 this week and next! We originally weren’t planning to do any story but… then we did.” This would offer some explanation as to why the DLC, titled “Farewell“, hasn’t been dated yet. Thorson did assure fans that development was in the “home stretch” back in April, and this latest update seems to indicate that significant progress is being made.

Celeste is currently available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and PC. You can read GamingBolt’s official review here to learn more about the game. There hasn’t been too much information about the DLC, aside from it being one continuous chapter, but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Maybe we’ll get a proper trailer reveal around E3 2019?

They need a little extra time, but the developer promises a heartfelt Farewell.

Celeste was a major indie success, selling over half a million copies by 2018’s end, and seeing huge critical acclaim. The game’s creator, Matt Thorson, unveiled free DLC coming to the game some time this year not long ago, promising a “very hard” set of new levels for the platformer. Now, it seems like the DLC is getting close to release- but won’t make it this month.

In a tweet, which you can see below, the developer describes the DLC levels as being in “the home stretch of development”, but does confirm it’s still not quite ready for an April drop. To coincide with the DLC, which is titled “Chapter 9: Farewell”, they have also decided to delay the release of the physical edition of the game, which is set to be distributed by Limited Run Games. No further dates or time frames were given.

Celeste is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. The DLC update will be free across every platform.

Nintendo reveals the cream of the indie crop on the Switch.

The Nintendo Switch is an indie games paradise. That’s why Nintendo can have 30 minute long streams for upcoming indie games, and why indie games, even ones associated with competing platforms, make the jump to it. Indie games in general sell extremely well on the Switch—they’re just perfect for it, you see.

But some obviously sell more than others, and at GDC, Nintendo revealed the top ten selling indie games on the Switch. The list, which is not given in order, includes some expected showings, such as Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Dead Cells, and Celeste, while some unexpected games also peek in, such as Graceful Explosion Machine and Golf Story. As Kotaku points out, Shovel Knight had sold 370,000 units on the Switch by last April—it is not on this list, so we can at least assume every single one of these games has sold more than that (some have probably breached a million units or more).
