30. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

Perfection in a video game doesn’t come easy, but Polyphony Digital has come closer than most with several of its Gran Turismo titles. Despite cutting back on the number of cars, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is arguably the best of the bunch in terms of physics, AI, and sound (and even its visuals still hold up today). That’s before getting into the improvements with car shops, Gran Turismo Mode, and the long-awaited arrival of Formula One cars.

Grand Theft Auto IV

With the hype surrounding GTA VI plus GTA: The Trilogy’s semi-recent release, GTA IV’s foray through Liberty City’s grimy suburbs has become an outcast. Granted, most of you have completed Niko Bellic’s rise through LC’s criminal underworld already but take a moment to remember it’s surprisingly emotional story, of Bellic desperately outrunning his past in pursuit of a better life for him and his family. If you’ll allow us to describe it as such, its arguably the most relatable narrative in GTA’s canon.

Halo 2 

The original Halo was a driving force in creating a substantial market share against Sony and Nintendo, and expectations for the sequel were naturally high. Halo 2 delivered upon those expectations in spades, combining an adrenaline-pumping story with a comprehensive suite of multiplayer options making for an experience that keeps you hooked and doesn’t let go. Hundreds of thousands of fans would have fond memories of duking it out against friends, and Halo 2 might just be the defining Xbox experience for a majority of those fans.

System Shock

System Shock is widely considered to be one of the best immersive sims of all time, and while the original still has an irrefutable charm to its aged gameplay – the game would undoubtedly benefit from a full-fledged remake. Thankfully, Nightdive Studios is working on just that – and the project looks really promising with completely redone visuals and smoothed out modern gameplay. System Shock remake releases for all major last-gen and current-gen console platforms and PC in March 2023, and those wanting to get a taste of the experience can try out a demo through Steam right now.

Remedy Entertainment – the developer of the originals – will develop the project using its proprietary Northlight Engine. Rockstar Games – the owner of the IP and developer of 2012’s Max Payne 3 – will fully fund and publish the title. Remedy says it will have “a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game”.

The game is currently in the “concept” development stage, which means it’s early doors right now, but it’s been confirmed that it’s in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Rockstar Games co-founder Sam Houser. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

“Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same,” said Remedy CEO Tero Virtala. “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”

Remedy Entertainment has plenty of irons in the fire right now. In addition to the Max Payne remake project, the studio is currently also working on Alan Wake 2, free-to-play shooter Vanguard, a full-fledged Control sequel, and Control multiplayer spinoff Condor. Of these, only Alan Wake 2 – which is set to release sometime in 2023 – currently has a launch window.

Rockstar Games is keeping awfully busy these days and though it’s only really showcased Red Dead Redemption 2 as it’s big new game in development, there’s a lot more that’s going on at the studio.

Take for instance the fact that the Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne and Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition for the PlayStation 4.

Though one of these eventually made its way to the PS3 as a port – namely Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – the rest are better known for releasing during the PlayStation 2 era. This seems to be the case of Rockstar re-releasing these titles as classic PS2 games for the PS4 rather than full-fledged HD remastered ports.

Rockstar is currently busy working on an HD remastered version of L.A. Noire for the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch though. It’s out on November 14th for those platforms.
