Tekken X Street Fighter was originally announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2010 alongside Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken.

It’s hard to believe now, but Tekken X Street Fighter was announced 11 years ago at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con alongside Capcom’s Street Fighter X Tekken, which would release in 2012 and was actually pretty good. Tekken X Street Fighter, however, never released. We’ve speculated on why in the past, but while Tekken series lead Katsuhiro Harada insisted the game was still in development, it was safe to assume the game was canceled.

And today, we got official confirmation that was the case. “Development stopped but we got about 30 percent done,” Harada said in the latest episode of Harada’s Bar, his video talk show. “We even had motions, which you can see reflected in Akuma.”

“We were working really hard on that, we really were,” Harada added. “Wish we could show you the models and stuff. We had really nice models. I really wanted to show them Chun-Li. I wanted to show you guys all the characters. We were pretty confident.”Harada also said that while he would like to have shown off the models and concept art the team had, it can’t happen without Capcom’s permission.

This isn’t a huge surprise. Harada had previously said that making Tekken X Street Fighter was harder to justify given the success of Tekken 7. “Traditionally, the life cycle of a fighting game is very short – maybe one or two years and then you make a sequel. But Tekken 7 is very successful as a service game with its DLC. That makes it much harder to justify releasing another game, while Tekken 7 is still doing so well.”

It’s a shame that the game will never release, as several people told Harada they were still excited for it when he asked about the game in a Twitter poll in 2019. Officially canceling the game, however, does let fighting game fans move on. Now if we could only get Rockstar to admit that Agent is officially canceled.

Let me be honest. What percentage of you are really waiting for "TEKKEN x Street Fighter"?

(My marketing view is that TK7 and SFV are selling very well, so there is no opportunity to drop TK x SF on the market).
— Katsuhiro Harada (@Harada_TEKKEN) December 13, 2019

George R.R. Martin says that while he did a lot of background work for From Software, but hasn't worked on the game in years.

George R.R. Martin’s work on Game of Thrones is probably what he’s most well-known for, but his work on Elden Ring is something for fans to be excited about. And apparently, all of it was already done years ago. The news comes from an interview Martin did with WTTW News Chicago, in which he was about about his involvement in the game.

“My work on it was actually done years ago,” Martin explained. “These games, they’re like movies, they take a long time to develop. Basically, they wanted a world created to set the game in. World building is a big factor in fantasy and science fiction. You’re not only talking characters and the plot, but the setting is almost as important as everything else: Tolkien’s Middle-Earth, Robert E. Howard’s Hyborian Age, the Foundation universe of Isaac Asimov.”

Martin says his job mostly consisted on working up detailed background information for the game world and From did the rest of the work from there. He also said that while From would occasionally show him monster designs or other “cool things,” he hasn’t worked on the game in years. “The game has been slowly developing and now it’s coming out in January, I believe, so I’ll be as excited as anybody else to see it,” Martin said.

Supermassive took feedback from Man of Medan to improve Little Hope.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is one of the most interesting projects of the last few years. The first game, Man of Medan, released last year and while it had a few issues, it was a solid first step in the experiment. The second title, Little Hope, is set to come this year and today we got a very detailed breakdown of various aspects of the game.

In a video posted via the official Twitter, CEO of Supermassive Games Pete Samuels talked about the game, first citing its general plot and many influences. While it does share some actors from the first game, the cast of characters are a totally new batch. The story will follow a group of students and their professor after their bus crashes and they find themselves trapped in an abandoned New England town, trapped by a seemingly supernatural fog. While it will mostly take place in modern day, the story will at times go back to the 17th century as the dark secrets of the town’s past are unraveled. Samuels cites a lot of influences, such as The Witch, The Blair Witch, The Exorcist and, keeping to video games, Silent Hill.

As far as the technical side, Samuels says they’ve taken a lot of feedback from issues people had with Man of Medan. They’ve implemented more free form camera options, as well as clearer prompts for interacting with the environment and QTEs. You can see those highlighted in clips from the game. It will also include the variety of multiplayer party modes from the first title.

The Dark Pictures: Little Hope is slated to launch this summer for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. You can see the reveal trailer through here.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is quite the feat. Not only does it bring together the vast roster from the many Super Smash Bros. rosters, it added even more. With the game’s DLC there’s been a variety of third party characters that’s joined the fold, and now two more come forth.

The announcements came via today’s Nintendo Direct. Banjo-Kazooie had been announced for awhile and will drop at some point today. The duo will come with their own spinning stage that’s a throwback to the classic N64 titles they come from.

In addition, we got the announcement of the fourth fighter. In a very fun video we see the Smash Invitation floating through various SNK franchises like King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown until eventually arriving in the hands of Fatal Fury‘s Terry Bogard (as leaks suggested), who will represent the classic company near the end of the year.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch. Banjo-Kazooie will launch today, and Terry will come to the fight November of this year.

Gotta go back to actually reading the item descriptions.

While FromSoftware’s Sekiro shared a lot of DNA with its predecessors (in the form of the Souls franchise), it was a departure in two key areas. The first being combat, but the second being storytelling. Unlike the Souls games, Sekiro had a plot that was given in a straightforward way through several cutscenes. What about the next game from the company, Elden Ring? Well, it seems they’re going back to the vague with their next fantasy epic.

For those not familiar, the Souls titles didn’t have a traditional story. Instead it involved a handful of cutscenes, devoid of context, and nothing more on the surface. The story was tucked away in the game’s lore through item descriptions, optional conversations with NPCs, or other environmental storytelling. In an interview with IGN, the game’s director said with Elden Ring they are going back more to that style of storytelling over Sekiro‘s more traditional, straightforward approach.

He’s also said the combat will be heavily inspired by Dark Souls as well, so it seems that the game will very much be a return to that formula for fans. Elden Ring is announced to come out in 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You can keep up to date on all the news on the game here.

So what is an Elden Ring?

The newest game from FromSoftware was announced at Microsoft’s E3 conference, and already fans are speculating about what the game will be. The trailer reveal told us little, outside a very dark and eerie feeling that’s been a staple of many of the company’s games. But what is an Elden Ring? Well, it’s a neat name, for one, but Director and Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki breaks down a little more meaning.

In talking with IGN, Miyazaki talked about how the Elden Ring refers to a strange key item in the game’s world. It governors over the rules of the world, but it has been shattered in some way that has driven everything into chaos. He also says that it’s also a reference to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, and the concept of a ring or circle having an undefinable amount of power. Miyazaki even says it will not only affect the story, but also the gameplay.

“The Elden Ring is a mysterious, key element in the foundation of the world we have created,” says Miyazaki. “It forms the rules and rhythm of this world. But as you can see in our trailer, it has been shattered.”

Elden Rings is slated to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you’re curious about what else the developers have said about the game, check it out here.

The game will have character interactions outside the main DBZ story

Dragon Ball is back in a big way nowadays. A continuation of the series is out with Dragon Ball Super that’s produced a hugely successful TV series, manga and several films. But for the next game, we’re going back to the beginning of Dragon Ball Z with a new RPG that follows Goku. We don’t know how far the game will go, the trailer showed up to at least the Frieza Saga. But it seems that the game will step out a bit, as it will feature character interactions not from the original story.

In an interview with Twinfinite, the game’s Director, Ryosuke Hara, spoke about while the game’s overall plot would follow Z fairly close, it does branch out and have you interacting with characters that Goku didn’t interact with in the original manga or anime. He specifically mentions characters that were in previous arcs of the Dragon Ball story that did not have much, or any, screen time during Z.

“There’s the main story plot that you follow, and then there’s substories, like what you saw in the demo with Eighter [Android 8]. There’s gonna be other characters from past Dragon Ball series that will make an appearance kind of ‘all grown up.’ You can talk to them and that will reveal, you know, a side story. So yes, definitely, it’s a lot of that too.

“There’s also a subquest that introduces a conversation between characters that you probably have never seen interact before. So that’s another thing that we sorta have hidden in substories.”

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will release in 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The action RPG could be coming to Nintendo’s system.

Code Vein resurfaced recently, after a lengthy delay, with a producer video and a network test demo. The game is very anime-inspired in its art style and plays similar to Dark Souls, like many recent action RPGs. it is slated to come out this year and will come to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. There’s no official announcement for Nintendo’s Switch, so there’s no way to take the game on the go for whenever it does release. But that could change down the road, according to producer Keita Iizuka.

In an interview with GameSpot, Iizuka talked about several aspects of the game, like the delay and how the game puts its own spin on the Souls formula with the buddy system. When talking about platforms the game will launch on, he opens the door to the game possibly making its way to Nintendo’s system.

“We are focusing on development for PS4, Steam, and Xbox One,” he said. “But as far as the possibility of porting to Switch or [the Epic Games Store], there might be a possibility down the line. We can’t really say for sure at this point.”

Bandai Namco has had several high profile games release on a delayed schedule for the Switch, so it’s very possible we’ll see Code Vein there down the road. For now, the game is slated for this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The action game returns along with a network test.

Code Vein was an interesting project that popped up from the team behind the God Eater games. Instead of tackling their own brand of Monster Hunter this time, it was a take on the Dark Souls-like formula that has become increasingly popular. Unfortunately, it seemed to hit a bit of snag and suffered a major delay. The game has been totally silent since that delay almost a full year ago, but now it’s come back to life in a big way. It recently got a behind-the-scenes video to detail a lot of the aspects of the title, and a network test for people to try it out.

The video below features various members of the development team talking about the game. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the player character awakens as a vampiric creature called a Revenant. The dev team hopes to balance the story and gameplay properly, making sure one doesn’t overwhelm the other.

As far as difficulty, they hope to make it challenging, which is a staple of these Souls-like games. But the director does say they take to heart the lessons they’ve learned from God Eater about also creating systems to ease players into the game as to not frustrate and drive them away too easily in the beginning.

Along with the video, the game will get a demo Network Test that you can sign up for that will run from May 31 to June 3. You can check out the link and video discussed above at the bottom of the page.

Code Vein is still slated to come out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC some time this year.

Yesterday we reported that the latest update to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, 3.1.0, seemed to have some interesting code that hinted at a possible VR mode being added to the game. Well, the update is live now, and it’s official- the game now has a dedicated VR mode now that lets you get closer than ever to the action on-screen.

Along with the update, Nintendo released a trailer to show off the new mode. It is single player only, so you can’t go online in VR mode or play with friends. You can watch a bout between CPUs across “dozens” of the many maps, or jump in and play against the computer. You can see from the trailer there’s a lot of tilting movement you can do as you rotate around the levels to get a much different view than typical with the franchise. Of course, you will need a Labo VR Kit to use this mode.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch. The 3.1.0 update is live now.
