Creative director Yoko Taro and series producer Yosuke Saito are currently working on a different game that they hope to talk about in 2024.

NieR: Automata easily ranks as one of Square Enix’s best (and most successful) games in recent years, but six years on from the game launch, there have been little to no indications that a full-fledged sequel is going to arrive anytime soon. What does that mean for the future of the franchise? Well, the people in charge of the series certainly have every intention to keep working on it.

As reported by Japanese outlet 4gamer, speaking recently during a presentation at the G-STAR 2023 event in South Korea, Nier’s series producer Yosuke Saito said that though a new NieR game isn’t in development just yet, he and creative director Yoko Taro have every intention to work on a new instalment at some point.

Interestingly enough, Saito added that though there are certain current circumstances due to which a new NieR title hasn’t entered development, as long as Taro as alive, he will continue to work on the franchise. He also confirmed that currently, he and Taro are working together on a different game that they hope to talk more about sometime in 2024.

Given the success that the NieR franchise has enjoyed in recent years, it would be a surprise to not see a new instalment at some point in the future, so hopefully an announcement won’t be too far off. As of April this year, NieR: Automata had shipped 7.5 million units worldwide, while last November, Square Enix announced that NieR Replicant had shipped 1.5 million units.

Playing these games a second time around is more or less essential for having the complete experience.

There are games that you play once and forget about them after a short while. Then are the really good games; games that offer an experience that stay with you long after the credits roll. These are the games that you will come back to from time to time, and a good New Game+ experience is vital in making these revisits meaningful and fun. To that end, here are 15 games that offer the best new game+ experiences:

Bloodborne

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first. FromSoftware is one of the best when it comes to offering a great new game+ experience, so much so that many consider it to be the actual game. Once you defeat the final boss and unlock any of the available endings, you can start a new game + which retains your stats, weapons, and most items. And in turn, the enemies have more health, the bosses are more challenging, and shop prices are higher. In short, a re-run across this game’s desolate landscapes remains challenging a second time through – and is a perfect option for those who want to remain in the Hunter’s Dream for a while longer.

These recent single player games offer some amazing boss fights that will stay with you long after the credits roll. And oh, you will find nothing from the Soulsborne genre here.

Everyone loves a good single-player game with dynamic boss fights that are a true test of player skill and mechanical prowess, but recent years haven’t been all that kind to such games with most games falling under this category are restrained to the roguelike or Soulslike genre. But even so, there are quite a few great single-player adventures with entertaining boss fights that have been recently released and today, we will be looking at a few of them:

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village is like a rollercoaster ride that takes the player through different types of horrors. The game’s many different levels feature different kinds of spooks and scares that never fail to keep a player at the edge of their seats, and it’s all punctuated by surprisingly good boss fights – especially when compared to its direct predecessor Resident Evil 7. The fight against Heisenberg is especially bombastic, and so is the rooftop encounter against Lady Dimitrescu. It’s all capped off by a multi-phase boss fight against Mother Miranda, which is an excellent palate cleanser after the arduous journey of Ethan Winters through this village of horrors.

A game doesn't have to be out-and-out horror to scare the crap out of you.

By their very nature, bosses are meant to be intimidating foes that test every skill you’ve picked up as you’ve played a game. Some, however, turn out to be much more unsettling than you’d expect. Every so often, you’ll come across a boss in a game that isn’t exactly a horror experience, but will still make you shudder in your skin. This is a feature dedicated to fifteen such bosses.

NYX (PERSONA 3)

Persona 3’s final boss is a force to be reckoned with for several reasons. Not only does it look absolutely terrifying, it’s also the mother of all boss fights, with Nyx taking numerous forms throughout what might be one of the longest boss fights you’ll ever experience. Persona games have always dealt with darker themes, of course, but very rarely has it done so on the same level as it did with Nyx.

Something is teased for all titles in the JRPG franchise.

The NieR franchise is a bizarre one, as it started from a very niche title and then seemed to randomly explode in popularity due to its sequel, NieR Automata. It also has a unique focus on replaying the game’s campaign multiple times with each playthrough providing more and more story, often turning what you just did on its head plotwise. Now, it’s time for some news across the entire scope of the series come TGS.

A livestream has been announced to coincide with the event in question. The series has had a lot of these, but interestingly, this one seems like it’ll be pretty substantial as it will apparently have news for all three known titles in the NieR series: the currently available NieR Automata, the upcoming remaster of the first game NieR Replicant and the upcoming mobile title NieR Re[in]carnation. Replicant was recently rated in Taiwan so it’s possible a date could be coming, and we still don’t know much about Re[in]carnation. Automata is something of a wild card, so it’ll be interesting to see what they have for that game.

TGS 2020 will run from September 23rd to the 27th this year with digital events. The NieR livestream will be on the 24th. You can check out the full list of Square Enix’s planned show for the event through here.

Moments that will stick with us for years.

Thanks to their interactivity and the fact that technology keeps progressing at a rapid pace, video games have a way of making us feel things like no other medium of entertainment does. Countless times over the years, we’ve all experienced moments in games that made us pause and marvel at what just happened, moments that will stay with us for many years to come. In this feature, we’ll be talking about fifteen such moments.

WARNING: This feature contains spoilers for every game we discuss, so if we begin talking about a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

GOD OF WAR – REVELATIONS ABOUT FAYE

God of War was full of moments that shook us to our core. The Blades of Chaos, the reveal that Atreus is Loki- but rather than talking about the parts of the game that we’ve talked about countless times, we wanted to highlight something else. The revelation about Atreus right at the end of the game was certainly a huge moment, but something else that also gave the story an entirely new layer of depth was finding out that Faye had essentially been the orchestrator of Kratos and Atreus’ whole journey. She had Kratos cut down the tree that would send them out into the world, she marked the paths that both of them would want for the entire game- she was basically the writer of their story. Replaying God of War with that knowledge lends a whole new meaning to the game’s narrative.
