Roughly 600,000 copies of Capcom's classic sold on the Switch.

Okami is a prime example of a game where its commercial performance doesn’t even come close to doing justice to how good the game itself was. Often considered one of the best games of its time by many, Okami was a commercial failure for Capcom when it first launched- though thankfully, subsequent re-releases for various platforms helped the game sell much more, so that in its current state, it can no longer be deemed a commercial failure.

Now, leaked sales data from Capcom (who’ve had to deal with no shortage of leaks these past couple of weeks) has revealed how much the game’s most recent re-release, Okami HD, sold across every platform (via ResetEra). Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Switch is the platform the game performed the best on.

On the Switch, Okami HD sold 600,000 units, with the PC and PS3 trailing behind with approximately 536,000 and 529,000 units sold respectively. On the PS4, the game sold 445,000 units, while the Xbox One was (unsurprisingly, once again), the lowest selling version of the game, with 121,000 units sold.

When it launched on the PS2 and Wii, Okami sold roughly 600,000 units in total (300k on each), which would mean that the Nintendo Switch version of the game is the highest selling, period.

Whether or not we ever get to see a sequel remains to be seen. It remains in high demand, and there’s certainly been interest in the industry (outside of Capcom, at least) for a sequel. Earlier this year, a leak claimed that Okami 2 had once been in development with PlatinumGames and Capcom working together, but troubles during production led to the project being cancelled.

Capcom recently updated its list of Platinum Titles, which indicates games that have sold over one million units in their life-span. It revealed updated sales numbers for a number of franchises in the process. Monster Hunter World currently sits at 14.1 million units sold while Resident Evil 7: biohazard is at 6.8 million units sold.

Resident Evil 2, a remake of the 1998 PS One classic, is at 4.7 million units sold while Devil May Cry 5 managed to sell 2.7 million units. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne was reported to have shipped 2.8 million worldwide on October 29th and is now confirmed to have sold the same. Of course, there are a number of other first-timers to the Platinum Titles collection.

Okami HD, Mega Man 11 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection all managed to sell one million copies since launch. Capcom recently reported that it would work on more franchise revivals and remakes following the success Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5. We’ll see if this opens the door to new titles for Okami, Mega Man X and Dino Crisis in the coming years. In the meantime, check out Capcom’s top ten best-selling games till date below.

Monster Hunter World: 14.1 million units

Presumably it launches in the west around then as well.

Capcom confirmed that Okami HD, the fantastic remaster of the beloved PS2 classic, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, but they didn’t share a date, saying only that it would come some time this Summer. Now, we finally know when that might be- at least for the Japanese version of the game.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has confirmed that Okami HD launches on the Nintendo Switch on August 9 in Japan. Curiously enough, the Switch version seems to be rather expensive- but it also seems like, unlike in the west, where we are only getting a digital release of the game, Japan will get a physical Collector’s Edition.

While Okami is available on every device and your toaster by now, the Switch version is the first time that the game will be available to play portably. It also supports touch screen controls, as well as motion controls by way of the Joycons- though, naturally, you can ignore all that if you want to. A western release date has not yet been confirmed, but given that Capcom has moved more and more towards worldwide launches of late, we can safely assume it will be around the same time as it will be releasing in Japan.

The former PlayStation icon will be, as rumored and therefore expected, coming to Nintendo’s hybrid system. Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation confirmed that Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy will launch on the Nintendo Switch, come July 10. Apart from the Switch, Activision has also confirmed that the game will be launching on PC and Xbox One on the same day.

Another classic Switch will be getting is Okami HD- this gorgeous PS2 classic, which has since been made available on PS3, Wii, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, will be launching on the Switch this Summer, with support for motion controls and touch screen controls in addition to the traditional controls.

Finally, Nintendo’s own charming Wii U puzzle game Captain Toad Treasure Tracker will be making the jump to Nintendo Switch, as well as to Nintendo 3DS, available on July 13; the 3DS version will support touch and 3D compatibility, while the Switch version will have Mario Odyssey inspired worlds, including New Donk City, as well as a co-op mode.

Okami is still as impressive an achievement for video games as it was over a decade ago.

Okami may have been something of a commercial failure when it first launched on the PS2 back in 2006, but, as the few people who played it then will testify, it rightly went down as one of the greatest games of its generation. Eleven years later, it’s just as good, just as beautiful, just as inspired. That’s a testament to its timeless look and solid mechanics, and though there are a few issues in this game that cannot be ignored, Okami HD is the perfect opportunity to visit (or revisit) one of the most vividly imaginative video game worlds of all time.

The thing that is associated most commonly with Okami is its canvas-style cel-shaded visual palette- and for good reason too. More than anything else, the game looks like a beautiful painting in motion, with beautiful embellishments and animations further helping bring this incredibly beautiful world to life. Every area you visit is crafted with great care, every character you meet designed with great love. Even the tiniest little things such as the trees or the buildings have the kind of unique personality to them that you don’t expect to see in a video game all too often. On top of that, the visual enhancements that Okami HD has received are also top notch, with everything looking sharper and crisper. In fact, on the PS4 Pro, the game is rendered in 4K resolution, which makes the game look even more beautiful than its base version.

"More than anything else, the game looks like a beautiful painting in motion, with beautiful embellishments and animations further helping bring this incredibly beautiful world to life."

But the canvas-style look of Okami isn’t part of the game just because it looks as good as it does- no, it’s intrinsically tied to everything that makes Okami… Okami. You play as Ameterasu, who’s taken the form of a white wolf, and who, with the help of spirit companion Issun, must bring back life and colour to a dying world. You do that, of course, with the help of your celestial paintbrush, making use of it in all walks of the game, from the puzzles to the combat.

The puzzles aren’t mind-benders or anything, and the answers to the questions the game poses are usually simple and snappy. Paint the sun to change night to day, draw a circle around a tree- things like that. It’s simple and effective, always entertaining but, sadly, never quite challenging. It’s on the combat side of things that the use of the paintbrush becomes truly interesting. While thanks to your limited and depleting inkpot reserves you can’t whip out your paintbrush whenever you wish, meaning that combat isn’t all about painting, it’s still a central mechanic.

For instance, you can draw traps and hazards for your enemies to fall into, which is something that comes in handy during especially tough battles, such as during times when you might be outnumbered, or during some of the game’s more challenging boss battles. There’s a number of techniques to learn for your paintbrush too, so Okami always manages to keep things interesting. When you aren’t using your paintbrush during combat, melee attacks are nimble and snappy, and pulling off combos is extremely satisfying. This mix of melee combat and using your paintbrush makes for a combat system that is unlike anything you’ll see in a game, and is one of the many things that helps Okami stand out.

"This mix of melee combat and using your paintbrush makes for a combat system that is unlike anything you’ll see in a game, and is one of the many things that helps Okami stand out."

It must be said, however, that the controls end up feeling finicky on a few occasions. When the game launched on the Wii, it was an absolute treat for its fans, since painting in the game using actual motion controls made it that much more immersive and responsive. By comparison, on the PS4, Okami doesn’t feel as fluid or as natural. That isn’t to say the controls are bad, by any means, or that they can get in the way of your enjoyment. The control scheme itself is quite easy to pick up, actually, but as someone who’s played the game’s Wii version, I just couldn’t help but draw comparisons between the two. It also doesn’t help that Okami HD is occasionally let down by a wonky camera, which is an issue that often becomes hard to ignore, especially during fast-paced battles.

Outside of combat and puzzles, Okami HD is still a game that is brimming with content. This is a long game, to say the least, full of side quests and side activities, and all in all, it will take you anywhere between thirty to forty hours to complete it. Finishing side quests usually involves you helping the NPCs and side characters you come across, which further results in you gaining more followers. That, in turn, grants you further strength to learn new abilities, or power up your old ones. All activities you take part in in Okami feed into each other, so almost nothing feels like filler content.

It also helps that the characters you come across are usually quite well-written. Despite being set in a dying world, Okami doesn’t fall short in the humour department, and thanks to its witty and intelligent writing, you’ll often find yourself chuckling or smiling at something you see or hear in the game. The one exception to this is Issun, your spirit companion. Issun’s constant rambling in the background, serving the function of tutorials and telling you where to go next or what to do in a certain situation, start to become a little grating after a while, and the worst part is that he just never shuts up. Sure, after a while, I learnt to block him out and just enjoy the game, but some people might still find the constant blabbering a little overbearing.

"All activities you take part in in Okami feed into each other, so almost nothing feels like filler content."

From a narrative perspective, Okami is surprisingly good. It draws on Japanese folklore quite heavily, but even if you’re not all too familiar with the same, its inherently interesting setting and its numerous twists and turns along the way will make sure that you’re constantly invested in the events the game portrays. It’s nothing to write home about, and it’s far from being one of the game’s strongest aspects, but it’s still solid.

Okami was criminally overlooked back in the day, in spite of how well received it was- a great many people never got to play it, which is a crying shame. Okami HD, however, is the perfect opportunity to experience one of the most innovative and enjoyable games of the last few years. It’s rare to come across a game that is over a decade old that somehow manages to feel perfectly in line with the quality of experiences you’d expect even today, but that is exactly what Okami HD is.

Capcom’s HD remake for Okami is now available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The critically acclaimed action adventure title, which takes a number of cues from The Legend of Zelda series, originally released in 2006. It was developed by Clover Studio for the PlayStation 2 but didn’t really rake in the sales. Over the years, it’s been ported to the Nintendo Wii and PS3.

The story of Okami sees Amaterasu returning to ancient Nippon to fight the evil Orochi. Throughout her travels, Amaterasu must use her Celestial Brush to bypass obstacles and defeat various foes.

One of the more intriguing aspects of Okami HD its art style that utilize Sumi-e ink. This is rendered in high resolution for the HD remake and also allows players to either play in widescreen mode or 4:3 ratio. The loading screen mini-games from the original have also been faithfully ported over.

Capping off an amazing year of games, December presents 10 more awesome releases.

It’s been a pretty wild year for video games. We’ve had our fair share of amazing releases and disappointing titles but nearly every month has been packed with great games to play. December will be no different so let’s take a look at the top 10 games to play as 2017 ends.

Hello Neighbor

Have you ever wanted to play a stealth game where your neighbor was the enemy, probably wanted to kill you and had an adaptive AI to prevent you from trying the same trick twice? Hello Neighbor is probably your best bet. It’s an intriguing mix of survival and stealth as you explore numerous different ways to infiltrate your neighbor’s home. Recent updates have diversified the gameplay even further with the ability to double jump and escape the neighbor should you be caught. The real question is whether Hello Neighbor will finally hit its December 8th release date and not suffer another delay. It arrives for Xbox One, PC and Mac OS.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Nintendo has been continuously scoring home runs this year, offering a good to great Switch title almost every month since launch. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 from Monolith Soft joins that club and it’s certainly a momentous title to close the year with. Along with a massive open world that should – if it’s anything like previous titles – offer hundreds of hours of gameplay, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a new story. Set on the backs of Titans, a scavenger named Rex discovers a Blade known as Pyra and must take her to Elysium, a paradise of sorts. There are colourful characters to meet along the way, different Blades to acquire, abilities to learn, combos to create and beautiful areas to explore. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is out on December 1st for the Nintendo Switch.

Resident Evil 7: End of Zoe/Not A Hero

It’s hard to believe that this year began with an excellent title like Resident Evil 7 and to cap that off, we’ll be receiving not one but two DLC on December 12th. Not A Hero is the free DLC focusing on Chris Redfield and his hunt for Lucas Baker after the main story while End of Zoe is a paid DLC pack that sees Zoe meeting up with a stranger named Joe. It’s also the same day that Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition launches so you can experience all previously released DLC along with the new additions in one great package.

Okami HD

After many, many moons, Capcom is finally fulfilling my wish of seeing Okami on PC. The fact that this is Okami HD, a remaster of the classic action adventure Zelda-like title, and it’s also coming to PS4 and Xbox One doesn’t hurt either. If you’ve never played Okami, it follows the tale of Amaterasu, who must stop the eight headed demon Orochi from conquering the land. More than just a higher resolution and widescreen support, Okami HD offers the chance to revisit one of the most underrated video games of the PS2 era. It releases on December 12th.

Battlefield 1: Turning Tides

December marks the release of Battlefield 1’s next DLC Turning Tides. Or at least, it’s the first stage of the content release which will include battles on land, sea and air along with two new maps – Cape Helles and Achi Baba – out this month (an additional two maps arrive next month). You can expect six new weapons like the M1917 Trench Carbine, Type 38 Arisaka and the M1917 MG among other weapons. New vehicles, a new faction, a new Operation and the Conquest Assault mode where players must take back and hold areas occupied by defenders will also be coming. The first wave of content will arrive on December 11th 2017 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC players while the second wave is out in January 2018.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris

Despite every single indication that this will be another bland DLC for Bungie’s Destiny 2, Curse of Osiris at least offers…some new story. Essentially, you’ll be looking for Osiris, the legendary Warlock, and attempting to battle the Vex’s next big evil plan. This involves heading to Mercury and The Infinite Forest, which offers random arrangements of levels and time periods, along with forging new weapons. There’s even something called a raid lair to add on to the Leviathan and which should hopefully be more fulfilling. Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris is out on December 5th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

DOOM VFR

After bringing DOOM to the Nintendo Switch by some miracle, Bethesda Softworks is now gearing up for DOOM VFR. This is the virtual reality version of the game but it still maintains the demon slaying, bone-tearing, arm-ripping action that defined the original. While we’re not sure how the fast-paced experience will translate to virtual reality – where the less insane movement, the better – but it certainly has us intrigued. DOOM VFR will be coming to PlayStation VR and HTC Vive via Steam on December 1st.

Fallout 4 VR

More Fallout 4? Yes, there’s more Fallout 4 and this time, it’s heading to HTC Vive. The controversial first person shooter/RPG has seen a number of updates, DLC, the Creation Club with its lame add-ons and so on. But this time, we get to do it all in virtual reality. The highlight of Fallout 4 VR is the fact that this isn’t just a slice of the game. It’s the entire experience and for what it’s worth, early impressions seem favourable if not outright excited. Still, if you want something to justify that VR purchase that isn’t called DOOM VFR, then Fallout 4 VR will be available on December 12th via Steam.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (Xbox One)

One of the most eagerly anticipated Xbox One exclusives isn’t even from Microsoft, nor did it start out as an Xbox title. We’re talking about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the 100 person Last Man Standing title that’s swept the world with 22 million copies sold on Steam. From its humble roots on Early Access, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has shattered a number of records on Steam and version 1.0 is currently in the testing phase. That version will release in late December for PC users but Xbox One players can look forward to playing it through Xbox Game Preview on December 12th.

Final Fantasy 15: Episode Ignis

So it’s not exactly meant to be the meatiest content releasing for a game in December but Final Fantasy 15: Episode Ignis does look pretty fun. Releasing on December 13th, the DLC will focus on Ignis as he temporarily teams up with Ravus Nox Fleuret aka Luna’s brother in order to secure the safety of both Noctis and Luna. Ignis’s abilities are pretty interesting as he throws spell dagger and can target numerous enemies at once. The story should also help fill in some awkward holes – like how Ignis was blinded and what other events occurred in Altissia while Leviathan was stomping around.

Okami HD was announced earlier today for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC by Capcom, but only with a Japanese release date confirmed. Now, Capcom have also announced the western release date for the remaster of the beloved game- Okami HD will launch in North America and Europe ahead of its launch in Japan, releasing on December 12.

It will also be a steal for just $19.99 (and anyone who has ever played Okami will tell you that it is more than worth that price). That’s not all, either- Capcom also released some brand new screenshots from the remake.

These weren’t just any screenshots, either- these are screenshots in glorious 4K (which the remake will be supporting), showing off the game’s gorgeous and popping art style in the much vaunted high resolution standard. Make sure to check out all of these screenshots below for yourself. In addition to the impending PS4, Xbox One, and PC release, the game is also out now on PS2, Wii, and PS3.

Set to release in December in Japan.

It has been close to 11 years since we first saw the release of Okami on the PS2, way back in 2006. Since then, the game has become a favorite among gamers worldwide, beloved because of its beautiful art style and its originality at the time. Recently, the game has received some attention after a few rumors and leaks which have suggested that a possible PS4 and Xbox One HD versions of the game might soon be released.

In the latest issue of the Weekly Edition of Famitsu, Capcom has officially announced that the game is set to release on December 21st in Japan for the PS4 and Xbox One, and on December 13th for the PC. Okami HD will support 4K resolution (although it’s not clear whether this will be only for the PC version or whether it will also be enhanced for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X).

There will also be a return of the loading screen mini-games from the original Okami for the PS2. A physical release will be available only for the PS4. It is good news enough that owners of the Xbox One and PC gamers will be able to experience this masterpiece on their preferred platforms, with an added bonus of HD resolutions.

At this point, a western release has not been confirmed yet.
