While we wait until the end of this month to find out what exactly the mysterious Persona 5 R and Persona 5 S are, it seems like someone claims to have spilled the beans on both games. According to an unsubstantiated report by GearNuke, citing unnamed sources, Atlus is about to announce two re-releases of Persona 5.

Persona 5 The Royal, the one that has gotten more fanfare, is apparently an enhanced re-release of Persona 5. It’s a re-release in the vein of Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 Golden, and features new content, new characters (including the female character shown off in the game’s debut trailer), an extended epilogue that’s 20 hours long or so, and new Personas and Social Links. Persona 5 The Royal is a PS4 exclusive, and Atlus was hoping for a worldwide release, but won’t be achieving that owing to the amount of work necessary for the localization.

Persona 5 S is apparently a Switch re-release of the original game. It will not feature any of the additional content that The Royal will add, but will have some “Nintendo-specific enhancements”, which I assume will be something inconsequential like Nintendo-themed costumes or maybe a Kirby Persona or something.

There is a Persona 5 Arena game in the works, but it is early in development, according to this report.

For now, I would advise extreme caution trusting any reports about Persona. Given the general anticipation around the pressing announcements, there are loads of leaks going around, that may not be accurate. Generally speaking, the information in this report sounds reasonable enough, and not too out of the ordinary—but until we have an official indication of what we are looking at, I wouldn’t count on any of this happening.

Atlus recently announced Persona 5: The Royal for the PS4, a game we don’t know much of beyond what its teaser hinted at- but P5R isn’t the only thing they’ve been teasing for the past few months. Something else they’ve been teasing is P5S, which many have assumed is going to be a Switch port of Persona 5, especially given how protagonist Joker is on his way to join the fight in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

One other thing that has led to that speculation is Atlus’ registration of the P5S.jp domain. Interestingly enough, that domain has now been updated, with its splash screen proudly displaying April 25th as the date more information will be revealed. April 25, of course, is one of the days the annual Persona Concert takes place. Given how April 24, the first day of the concert, has already been confirmed as the day we will receive more information on PS4’s Persona 5: The Royal, could April 25 be the day Atlus makes the long-awaited and long-rumoured Persona 5 Switch announcement?

Following the broadcast of Persona 5 the Animation: Stars and Ours, Atlus announced Persona 5: The Royal. A teaser commercial was showcased featuring a new female character talking about the Phantom Thieves. Check it out below and let the speculation begin about her identity.

The character in question is asked what she thinks about the Phantom Thieves, the latter forming the heroes of Persona 5. She responds, “I think helping people is a wonderful thing, but if I had to say, I don’t like them. I don’t think the Phantom Thieves’ methods will make the world a better place or help anyone. In the end, I feel like you can only solve that yourself.”

The commercial ends with a promise for more information on April 24th at the Persona Super Live concert. It’s more or less assumed that this is a new character that players will be able to control. But if Persona 5: The Royal (previously referred to as just Persona 5 R) is an extension of the base game, how will she fit into the current story? Maybe The Royal is simply a separate story scenario taking place during the main game?

Rumours of Persona 5 coming to the Nintendo Switch still abound, and protagonist Joker is still slated to arrive in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as DLC. Regardless of how Persona 5: The Royal shapes up, there’s plenty for fans to look forward to this year.
