Bill Money is an industry veteran, having worked on Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Mirage, and WB Games Montreal's Batman: Arkham Origins.

While it has been something of an open secret that Rocksteady is working on a new Batman game, it looks like development is ramping up. As caught by social media user ArkhamVideos, Rocksteady Studios now has a new game director, Bill Money. While no official announcement has been made, Money’s LinkedIn profile indicates that he has been working with Rocksteady as a game director since July.

Money has worked in several different gaming companies in the past, with his most recent stint having been with Ubisoft Singapore where he worked on a host of titles, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, its The Siege of Paris DLC, and Assassin’s Creed Origins. In the past, Money has also worked on a host of different titles, including classics like the PS2 port of Deus Ex, as well as the PC and Xbox versions of Deus Ex: Invisible War.

A job listing spotted back in March indicated that Rocksteady’s next Batman game will be a cross-generation release, coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S as well as whatever the next-gen consoles might end up being. This would also indicate that the title is still three to four years away, since that would fall in the alleged time frame of new consoles.

Rocksteady’s work on this new title comes after the studio released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, considered by publisher WB Games as a commercial failure. Since then, however, DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran had noted that they had spoken with Rocksteady, along with Mortal Kombat and Injustice developer NetherRealm Studios about their respective next projects.

“We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division,” said Safran back in February. “It’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros. James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB, whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We sit with them and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”

Gunn spoke about having conversations with the studios about where they currently are with their projects, and what their next projects might be. It is worth noting that these conversations would likely involve games that are still early in their development processes.

“We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages,” said Gunn. “We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be, and we’ll say ‘Well, you may want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.’”

The failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had reportedly led to a host of lay-offs at Rocksteady. There were also reports at the time that the studio was looking to go back to working on single-player games rather than live-service multiplayer titles, since the studio is most well-known for its work on the Batman: Arkham games.

The weakest title in Rocksteady's legendary trilogy remains one of its best games ever made and holds up amazingly well.

The Batman. It’s impressive how, after all these decades – all the reboots, spin-offs, changing identities (poor Commissioner Gordon) and crossovers – the name still inspires some reverence and awe. Matching that is difficult, but when Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009 and followed it up with the even more incredible Arkham City in 2011, it became a franchise to reckon with. One which guaranteed a certain caliber of gaming that few other titles could replicate, simply because they understood the essence of what made Batman, The Batman.

And then Batman: Arkham Knight came along.

Launching on June 23rd, 2015, after extensive hype, it would seemingly offer a thunderous conclusion to the trilogy (and yes, trilogy because, for better or worse, Arkham Origins never gets its due). Previous titles exposed Batman’s never-say-die attitude and incredible detective skills, but this one stacked the gauntlet in a way that exposed his desperation. Maybe the Dark Knight wouldn’t come out of this in one piece. Maybe this really was the Knight’s End.

It seemed like the perfect recipe for a finale, especially with the Arkham Knight providing a suitable counter to Batman’s prowess. Gotham City presented a slick new open-world playground to explore, one teeming with new Riddler challenges, villains to nab, and unsuspecting crooks to divebomb on mid-dialogue. There was also the Batmobile, and who wouldn’t love tearing through the streets, targeting enemy vehicles and wrecking them (non-lethally) before engaging in some friendly interrogation? Did we mention how incredible everything looked? Even by today’s standards (and by those of more recent DC games, which we’ll get to), it looks absolutely phenomenal in pretty much every aspect.

In its endeavor to go a little too large with the sequel, Rocksteady introduced some rather annoying wrinkles. Which we’ll get into but ten years on, Batman: Arkham Knight is still an incredible open-world experience and one of the better superhero games out there, even if it kind of fumbled the climax. No major story spoilers, so don’t worry if you’ve never played it.

The events of Arkham City would make Gotham City much safer, but it’s not long before Scarecrow, missing since Arkham Asylum, would unleash a new spread of Fear Toxin. Batman quickly enters the fray, venturing to where it all began – Ace Chemicals. And then his world is turned upside down. Confronted by a new villain, the Arkham Knight, leading a group of mercenaries and working with Scarecrow, Batman has to deal with the kidnapping of Barbara Gordon, aka Oracle and a larger plan to infect the city. Then there’s the matter of the Joker, whose infected blood is turning a small group of patients into his successors.

There are some pretty high stakes, and Rocksteady offers up some pretty cool set pieces, but the overall narrative sags in places, especially when it comes to the Arkham Knight. Given the circumstances of his history with Batman, you would think that a proper battle would be in the offing, but it’s an anticlimactic series of takedowns while sneaking past his shots.

Then there’s the other elephant in the room – the Batmobile. Yes, it was cool when engaging in high-speed chases and even in some puzzles, but there were also the annoying tank missions, where you had to take down waves and waves of enemy vehicles. It was repetitive, and even if you still had missions where Batman stealthily took down a base’s opposition, destroying 20 militia checkpoints was simply too much to ask.

With those negatives out of the way, let’s talk about the many positives. The Free Flow Combat is still as robust as ever – countering and dodging is still fluid and responsive; finishers are hard-hitting and crunchy. Building up your combo and systematically dismantling a group of enemies never gets old, even if the variety of threats isn’t massively expanded over the previous games. One of the cooler new additions is Dual Play – it allowed for temporarily controlling the likes of Robin, Catwoman and Nightwing. You could even perform stylish dual takedowns. The only downside is that it’s only available in select points, and they’re not nearly as plentiful throughout the story. Stealth also remained as excellent as ever, with new options like imitating Harley Quinn’s voice with the Voice Synthesizer to lure enemies and pounce on them.

Regardless, it’s such a refined and well-done combat system that WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights looks downright sickening in comparison. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League incorporated a counter-shot mechanic but still leaned heavily on looter mechanics, “traversal skills” and unimaginative live-service objectives.

While there’s plenty to dislike about certain open-world activities in Arkham Knight, the Most Wanted system did open up a fresh variety of cases and villains for Batman to hunt down. The Perfect Crime is investigation-heavy and leads to a battle with one of the Dark Knight’s more disturbing villains. There are Riddler challenges to complete and Trophies to earn, and though it was an excuse to shoehorn more Batmobile segments, at least these were more focused on racing than combat. Other notable villains – and antiheroes – from the franchise also make their debut, presenting some interesting new stories and challenges.

The traversal also remained as incredible as ever – chaining grapples and glides just felt so intuitive and right, making the Batmobile stick out like a sore thumb all the more. Perhaps the biggest point of contention for most players is having to achieve 100 percent for the true ending, which only raises more questions than answers. Then again, with how Kill the Justice League followed up, I would have preferred if they went unanswered.

As good as the base game could be, the DLC didn’t quite hit the mark. Playing as Batgirl in a story set before Arkham Asylum? Good, save for the crashing issues. Controlling Harley Quinn as she battles against Blüdhaven’s cops? Decent if it didn’t last 30 minutes (and the Red Hood Story Pack is even shorter). Catwoman’s Revenge? A Flip of a Coin, which saw Robin taking on Two-Face? Bad, plain and simple. At least the Season of Infamy added multiple new missions and villains like Mr. Freeze, The Mad Hatter, and Killer Croc, each with their own stories.

Batman: Arkham Knight was no stranger to controversy at launch. While the Xbox One and PS4 versions ran flawlessly, delivering a consistent 30 frames per second even with such detailed weather effects, character models, and environments, the PC version was an unmitigated disaster. Performance issues, crashes, bugs, a capped frame rate (which still dropped extensively) – the whole works. It was so bad that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment suspended sales a day after launch and even offered refunds. Months would pass, and even with significant patches, the PC version still had issues, but it would eventually get much better.

Even with all these caveats – the Batmobile, some of the story beats, the finale, etc – Batman: Arkham Knight is still an essential experience. There’s something about Rocksteady exploring all these different avenues for the iconic hero, attempting to expand on his mythos and journey while following up on its successor, one of the greatest games ever made. It may not nail everything perfectly – I would probably rate it an eight out of ten, all things considered – but it’s still incredibly fun. Together with Arkham Asylum and Arkham Knight, this is one of the greatest video game trilogies out there.

Multiple leaks had claimed over recent months that Avalanche Software was working on a Definitive Edition of the mega-hit Hogwarts Legacy with support from Batman: Arkham and Suicide Squad developer Rocksteady Studios. This expanded re-release would have included new content in the form of an expansion, though it seems those plans have now been scrapped.

That’s as per a Bloomberg report that claims WB Games was “concerned” that the new content that was to be included wasn’t going to be “substantial enough” to justify the price point that the company was considering for the release. The report claims the expansion would have included a storyline revolving around a companion character that was cut from the base game.

Last month, the embattled WB Games announced a significant shakeup following a string of high-profile failures, which involved the shuttering of Monolith Productions and Player First Games, and the cancellation of the former’s Wonder Woman game.

A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy remains in development at Avalanche Software.

Rocksteady is seemingly targeting current- and next-gen consoles for its "upcoming unannounced AAA title."

Rocksteady Studios is seemingly ready to put the failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in its rearview mirror and return to what it knows best with a new Batman game. That game, however, is far away yet– far enough away, in fact, that when it does arrive, it will seemingly be a cross-gen game releasing for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and their respective successors.

That’s what a recent job ad suggests, at any rate. Spotted by a ResetEra user, a listing published by Rocksteady for a senior core engine programmer reveals that the studio is looking to release its next game on “high-end PCs, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the next generation of consoles.”

Of course, the listing doesn’t specifically mention a Batman game, instead referring to the project as an “upcoming unannounced AAA title”. However new single-player Batman game is what Rocksteady’s next AAA release will be, according to leaks. Plans could still change, especially given how early in development the game is right now, but for now, it looks like Rocksteady is eyeing a cross-gen release down the line.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's new plans for DC Studios include having a bigger focus on games where the stories mesh with movies.

As part of DC’s new initiative of creating a shared universe for its comic book adaptations, co-heads of DC Studios James Gunn and Peter Safran have reportedly spoken with Warner Bros. studios that have previously worked on superhero games, including Rocksteady Studios and NetherRealm Studios.

According to ComicBook, Gunn and Safran revealed during a recent DC Studios event that they spoke with the studios behind games like the Batman: Arkham series and the Injustice series about the future of DC-based games.

“We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette who runs that division,” said Safran at the event. “It’s really the first time its ever been this way at Warner Bros. James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We sit with them and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”

Gunn spoke about conversations with the studios revolving around various aspects of games that are currently in development, such as story. According to Gunn, the duo consulted with the studios about how their stories could potentially shape out, considering DC Studios’ future plans for those characters.

“We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages,” said Gunn. “We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be and we’ll say ‘Well, you maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.'”

It is worth noting that these conversations still revolve around the earlier process of game development, however, with Gunn stating that the fruits of these plans will start being seen a “couple years” from now.

While Rocksteady Studios has been reeling from the failure of its last major release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the studio has seemingly already begun work on its next title. Reports have indicated that Rocksteady will be returning to the Batman franchise for its next game, and a job listing from earlier this month indicates that it will be a third-person open world game with an emphasis on melee combat.

However, while it might be in development, the rumours have also indicated that the in-development title is still “years away from landing”. Work on the new game seemingly started once the studio had wrapped up Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with Rocksteady having reportedly started pitching a single-player title since back in June 2024.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League dealt a major blow to Rocksteady, however, with the company being hit by a new round of layoffs right before the year 2024 ended. Revealed back in January, the round of layoffs came soon after a similar one from back in September 2024, where Rocksteady had lost more than half of its QA staff at the time.

NetherRealm Studios, on the other hand, has largely focused on the Mortal Kombat franchise for a while, with its last DC-related title being fighting game Injustice 2. While the reception of the title was positive at the time, the studio has since been focused on continuing to support its more recent Mortal Kombat titles, including new DLC for Mortal Kombat 1.

Recent reports have claimed that the Batman: Arkham and Suicide Squad studio's next project is going to be another Batman title.

Rocksteady Studios tried to make the switch to third-person looter shooters with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but it’s safe to say that that experiment did not pay off. For its next project, the British studio seems to be reverting to something fans of its works will be much more familiar with.

Rocksteady Studios has published a job listing for a Game Director position on Warner Bros. Discovery’s official careers website. Under skill requirements, the listing calls for “strong design leadership and experience across multiple genres, particularly third-person action, melee brawlers, and open world traversal games.”

The Batman: Arkham trilogy emphasized melee combat and open world traversal, and based on this job ad, it certainly does seem like Rocksteady is set to return to that with its next game. Leaks have claimed that the studio’s next project is going to be another Batman title, courtesy of the critical and commercial failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It’s also claimed, however, that the game is still several years away, so it’s going to be a while before we hear much (if anything) about it. After all, Rocksteady doesn’t even have a game director for the project right now.

Rocksteady is allegedly returning to single-player titles and the Batman franchise after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's failure.

After the disastrous Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which saw its final content update last month, Rocksteady has been rumored to return to the Batman franchise. A new report by Bloomberg has confirmed that’s a single-player title but unfortunately, it may take a while to release.

“People familiar with the timeline” revealed that the project is “years away from landing.” As demoralizing as it sounds, it’s not too far-fetched – Rocksteady was reportedly pitching a new single-player game back in June 2024. With work on Suicide Squad wrapped up, it’s likely that preliminary work only just started.

The studio has also suffered layoffs in the wake of the live-service shooter’s failure. It would be even less surprising if it needed time to put a team together.

This setback is only the latest to affect Warner Bros. Games, which has reportedly rebooted Monolith’s Wonder Woman game. Announced in December 2021, it’s already over $100 million deep with its budget, but still years from release (and even that’s up in the air). Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.

A new Infamy Set, three Notorious Weapons, the final battle with Brainiac, and the conclusion to the game's story are finally live.

After Rocksteady announced that Season 4 would be the last for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Episode 8 is live for all players. It adds the Libra Infamy Set, which increases the damage dealt to and received by enemies by 50 percent per Scales of Libra stack.

There are also new Notorious Weapons like The Silencer, which deals 200 percent more damage to enemies affected by Scales of Libra stacks. Doctor Sivana’s Magic Bullets applies Scales of Libra and can electrify several foes simultaneously, while Chronos’ Equilibrium will deal 25 percent extra damage per one percent missing shield.

The final content update is also notable for the final battle against Brainiac and wrapping up the post-launch storyline. We’ll avoid spoilers, but it pretty much cements that no additional story content is forthcoming after this.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It will remain playable online (for now), though an offline mode is also available. PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can claim it for free until February 3rd.

This is the second round of layoffs to have hit Rocksteady after the poor reception and sales of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The studio behind the Batman: Arkham franchise of games, and more recently Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady, has been hit by a new round of layoffs. According to Eurogamer, the layoffs happened before the end of 2024, and included programmers, members of the artist teams, some of the QA staff.

Parent company Warner Bros. Games hasn’t made any comment on the layoffs affecting Rocksteady as of yet.

The studio was hit with a round of layoffs back in September 2024 as well, which resulted in Rocksteady losing more than half of its QA staff at the time. The reasons for both of these layoffs might be due to the poor reception and sales of Rocksteady’s most recent release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Our own review of the game criticised it heavily for its mediocrity, which was considered a shame owing to the fact that Rocksteady has, in the past, made well-reviewed single-player titles. A key point of criticism about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is the fact that it is a multiplayer-only live-service title with repetitive gameplay.

Warner Bros. Games had revealed after the game’s initial release that it had fallen short of sales expectations, resulting in a 41 percent drop in revenue.

The layoffs have come despite other rumours indicating that a new game based on Batman is currently in development at Rocksteady. The new title is expected to be a part of the Arkham series, but neither the studio, nor WB Games have confirmed the title.

Other rumours indicate that development of the game was likely inspired by the studio wanting to go back to its roots in developing single-player titles rather than multiplayer live-service ones like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The campaign and seasonal content will be playable offline. Leaderboards, Social Squad, and the in-game store are unavailable.

As Rocksteady announced no more content for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League post-Season 4, it also confirmed that the long-awaited offline mode will arrive on December 10th.

According to a new FAQ, players must create a separate profile to play offline. It can be a brand new profile starting from the beginning or a copy of an existing online profile with all your progress to date. The progression of both profiles is separate, and nothing carries over between them. Furthermore, you can’t convert an offline profile into an online one.

Otherwise, the offline mode includes all playable content, including the campaign and seasonal story missions. Players must still connect online and download Episode 8 when it goes live. It’s also confirmed that battle passes and LutherCoins won’t be available when playing offline. Cosmetics acquired in online mode (including Deluxe Edition content) are also usable offline.

Leaderboards and Social Squad also won’t be available alongside other social features. You can earn Achievements and Trophies on consoles when, though PC players must connect online for the same.

With the arrival of offline mode and Season 4 being the last content update, many would suspect the end of server support sometime soon. DC Games Support confirmed “no plans” to do so “at this time” but affirms that the title will remain playable offline when players update to a version containing the same. Those with physical copies can’t play offline without the latest update.
