Released in September 2020 for Google Stadia and then for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC in May 2021, Super Bomberman R Online supports up to 64 players. Along with the traditional Bomberman-style gameplay, one could acquire power-ups like the Punching Gloves and the classic Louies. Of course, the Classic style of play is also available for up to 16 players. One could also unlock new outfits, bomb skins and head accessories to customize their avatar.

No particular reason was given for the service’s closure. The the company said “various circumstances” were the cause but it also revealed that the series “is moving forward with new projects.” Konami hopes to announce these soon – stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Earlier in the month, we got a rating from the ESRB that indicated that Super Bomberman Online R would be potentially coming to PC. The game began life as a Stadia exclusive, but now it’s been confirmed that it will come to a variety of different platforms.

As announced via the official Konami Twitter account, the game will be coming to both PC and consoles. It will be free to play on those platforms with a Premium Pack that will grant you access to 14 additional characters based on popular Konami franchises of the past like Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill. It will also feature full cross-play between all platforms.

The game is based in part off Super Bomberman R that released in 2017. This game takes a broader multiplayer spin in a 64-player battle royale mode in the style of Tetris 99 as several groups of players play rounds simultaneously. Super Bomberman R Online is available now on Stadia and will release sometime later this year for other platforms.

A few years ago saw the unexpected return of the Bomberman series with Super Bomberman R. The game launched alongside Nintendo’s Switch and was largely acclaimed. It got a large heaping of post-launch content, which also pulled from the Konami catalog of IPs. There was also a separate online version of the game released last year on Stadia called Super Bomberman R Online that took the concept in a battle royale direction, and now it could be coming to other platforms.

The game originally launched on Google Stadia in September of 2020, and was eventually made free-to-play on the service. Now the ESRB has rated the game for the PC, indicating it could potentially be coming elsewhere. The original Super Bomberman R eventually ended up on most major, current platforms, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that end up being the case here as well. Online saw up to 64 players in online co-op battles.
